“I am watching the recent civil lawsuit against Cornell University and seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity, among others, with outright anger. According to the filing, a former student alleges she was drugged and assaulted by seven men at a fraternity in 2024. The lawsuit stated that the alleged perpetrators were temporarily suspended but allowed to ’mitigate their conduct‘ by writing essays. Cornell said in a statement Monday that “none of the individuals charged were offered the opportunity to write essays as a sole consequence of their involvement,” @JusticeHorn writes in #PostLetters.

“True institutional justice requires moral backbone. It begins when a person says, ’This happened to me,‘ and the institution refuses to force the victim to fight tooth and nail to demand proper accountability.”

The actions carried out by these 57 men, as well as the lack of proper accountability by Cornell University should be a reminder to everyone that whatever you aren't changing, you are allowing. It is our duty as men in college, men in a fraternity, and men in general to combat the culture that our kind has spent way too long uplifting in the name of brotherhood. It's time to look in the mirror, reflect, and reform our culture.

Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve. When we remember things in our past, our instinct may be to think about what we could’ve done differently. However, our ability to reconstruct memories and change our stories can also provide us the ability to understand why we responded to something in a particular way, and that we shouldn’t blame ourselves for what happened.
