As Flowers and Leaves comes to a close tomorrow, I wanted to share a little of what sits behind the work.

When my mother passed away, I inherited a box of family linens, because well “Christy likes textiles.” Inside were lace, a tablecloth, and a handwritten note I only recently noticed, identifying the tablecloth as belonging to my seventh great-grandmother, Sarah Doty Arnold (1789–1869). I’ve always felt a little ambivalent about the fussiness of doilies, but learning that these ancestors were Quakers and radicals, and beginning to trace their lives through the archives at Swarthmore College, has changed how I see these objects. I find myself imagining the rooms they adorned, the hands that made them, and the conversations they might have witnessed. These are among the few objects to survive my family’s eventual migration to the West Coast.

The note is written in my grandmother’s distinct cursive, a handwriting I recognized instantly from childhood ❤️

In the studio, I’ve been working through the intricacies of translating the structures of these domestic textiles into new forms, guided by their underlying logic. I’m interested in what carries through that translation, and how inherited patterns can move into new contexts, becoming something both familiar and entirely my own.

✨ Kicking off the fall exhibition season in Chicago with a memorable day of gallery visits & inspiring conversations

On September’s art tour, we spent the afternoon gallery-hopping around West Town and viewing exhibitions by extraordinary contemporary artists. At @richardgraygallery, we received an exclusive pre-opening look at sculptures by world-renowned artist Jaume Plensa, best known in Chicago for Crown Fountain in Millennium Park (@jaumeplensaofficial). At @patrongallery, we spoke with artist Lindsay Adams (@lindsaybriadams) about her abstraction process and her recent commission for the Obama Center. We viewed Brendan Fernandes’ (@brendanfernandes) photographs interrogating textile history at @moniquemeloche, and we viewed Clotilde Jiménez’s (@clotildejimenez) multimedia memoir of family secrets at @marianeibrahimgallery. We concluded the day with a delicious lunch in @volume_gallery and a conversation with artist Christy Matson (@christy_matson) about the intricacies of weaving textile works on a Jacquard loom.

A tremendous thank you to the artists and galleries for welcoming us. What an exciting opportunity to be immersed in Chicago’s contemporary art scene 💛

Flowers & Leaves opens today in Chicago 🍃

Ada Lovelace recognized that separating instruction from execution lets pattern unfold over time instead of in a single gesture. Textiles were always already doing that….

This show starts with a a physical record of that same mechanism, an early Jacquard-woven cloth that’s been in my family for generations, and builds nine new woven works that run on the same logic….

I am incredibly grateful and honored that "Intertwine (XI), 2025" has been acquired by the Detroit Institute of Arts @diadetroit as part of its permanent collection.

I began making this piece during my residency at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) @madmuseum where the ceramic structure was hand-built and fired. The work continued to develop through the combination of backstrap weaving and hand-dyed yarns, naturally dyed in my home studio. (Image 3-10: Behind the scenes of making Intertwine (XI), 2025)

The George Condo painting anchors the space alongside a Vincenzo De Cotiis coffee table, Eric Schmitt Kayak armchairs, a Sophie Rowley round side table, and a Sung Jang custom grav stool complementing the Palladium sofa from my collection. Guillaume Delvigne stools, a 1980s OCA floor lamp by Eleusi, and a Pierre Gonalons’ Ray ceiling light complete the room. Everything in conversation. XK
