Our collaboration with Stony Island Arts Bank is on through October 11th. An exhibition bringing together artists and designers that share a common desire to honor where they come from with objects of beauty and brilliance and of enduring meaning and substance. The many perspectives, cultures, and geographies represented in Chicago are brought to life here as these makers intend to better our world through art and craft.

Last day to catch this beautiful booth at @independent_hq in New York City featuring specially commissioned work by Robell Awake. Don’t miss this stunning presentation by @ryanleegallery and @salon94. From their press release:

RYAN LEE Gallery and Salon 94 announce Black SoHo, a presentation of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper made between 1961 and 1984, staged in the historic Breuer building — former home to the Whitney Museum of American Art. The booth brings together major works by Emma Amos, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Camille Billops, Frederick J. Brown, Vivian Browne, Ed Clark, David Hammons, and Norman Lewis: artists who built a life and a language in SoHo decades before the neighborhood’s story was written, a history that left many of them out.

The story we present is not one of a scene these artists joined, but rather one they built together: between the 1960s and late 1980s, more than twenty-five Black artists lived and worked in SoHo and its adjacent neighborhoods, converting raw manufacturing spaces into studios, stages, and salons. The loft—vast, unregulated, full of potential—was medium as much as workspace: it held the work and made it possible. Taken together, Black SoHo describes the people and place but also a framework for a lived practice.

Also on view is a set of furniture commissioned from contemporary chairmaker Robell Awake, whose practice treats craft objects as vessels for cultural memory. Awake’s chairs, which use oyster shells to make tabby concrete, are made in concert with the works in the booth, extending the loft’s logic into the present — the idea that a functional object can also be an act of community and resistance. by @volume_gallery

Open open! Arina Erdélyi, Arrangements.
.
.
In a series of ceramic lighting and wall works, Erdélyi explores tensions of scale and perspective through the pairing of miniature and full-scale forms. Table lamps frame miniature domestic scenes illuminated beneath silk shades, while full-scale plates hang above, extending these scenes into the surrounding space. The surface of each ceramic piece is defined by repeated impressions of a single trimming of ancestral lace pressed into the clay before being fired in a dark, matte black glaze. This motif travels across lamps and plates alike, turning a domestic ornament into a recurring mark, as the delicate pattern settles over these structures like draped cloth or an accumulation of dust in a preserved or abandoned room. by @volume_gallery

Please join us tonight from 5-8PM, we are thrilled to be opening two incredible shows!

In Gallery One - Christy Matson, Flowers and Leaves. This new body of work draws from on a recently discovered box of 19th C family textiles, including lace, tattered fragments, and woven cloth passed through generations, to consider inherited histories of labor, resistance, and ornament.

In Gallery Two - Arina Erdélyi, Arrangements. In a series of ceramic lighting and wall works, Erdélyi explores tensions of scale and perspective through the pairing of miniature and full-scale forms. taken in VOLUME GALLERY by @volume_gallery

Volume Gallery announces Flowers and Leaves, Christy Matson’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery, opening September 17th, from 5-8PM. This new work draws on a recently discovered box of nineteenth-century family textiles, including lace, tatted fragments, and woven cloth passed through generations, to consider inherited
histories of labor, resistance, and ornament.

“Flowers and Leaves begins with a Jacquard-woven tea cloth found in a box of family heirlooms, accompanied by a handwritten note from my grandmother tracing its passage through generations. The cloth dates to the 1830s or 40s and belonged to Sarah Doty Arnold, my fifth great-grandmother, a Quaker woman living in Macedon, New York, within a community shaped by abolitionist networks and early feminist organizing, where radical thought moved through households in
letters, meetings, and domestic exchange.”
