From knee surgery to the mountains of Georgia. ⛰️

Following a tibial tubercle osteotomy, Will has worked hard to rebuild the strength, endurance and confidence needed to return to the activities he enjoys.

Over the past few months, he’s gradually increased his hiking distances and tackled more challenging terrain, culminating in a trip to Georgia, to summit Mount Kazbek at 5,054m 🇬🇪

The next phase of his rehabilitation will focus on developing the strength, power and movement control needed to return to more demanding sports, including tennis and football.

A fantastic milestone, with plenty more to work towards.

Well done, Will! 👏

Risk vs Reward in High-Level Sport 🥊

An ACL injury. A dream on the line. And a decision Wendy wouldn’t change.

Four months ago, Wendy was selected to represent Team England at the European Muay Thai Championships in Rome.

Just two days later, she badly tore her ACL.

At 58, Wendy believed this could be her last opportunity to compete at this level. A dream she wasn’t ready to give up on.

What followed were some incredibly difficult conversations.

Combat sports already carry significant risks. We discussed how returning to a high-demand, pivoting sport with an ACL injury added a substantial risk of knee instability and further injury.

Wendy’s ACL injury was managed conservatively, without surgery.

Was the risk worth the reward?

There was no easy answer. Wendy understood what was at stake, physically and emotionally, and made an informed decision to pursue her dream.

And she was in. All in.

We worked to give Wendy the best rehabilitation we could, building strength, stability and confidence, and preparing her as best we could. But we couldn’t eliminate the risks.

Four months later…

Wendy made it to Rome, reached the European Female 67kg semi-final and brought home BRONZE! 🥉🥊

Unfortunately, her knee gave way early in the semi-final. As the final video shows, she kept fighting with everything she had until her corner stepped in to protect her.

Not the ending we’d hoped for, but an extraordinary achievement.

As physiotherapists, we must explain significant risks while understanding what matters most to the person in front of us.

These decisions are never straightforward. It’s about balancing our clinical responsibilities with the individual goals and values of the athlete, recognising that even with the best preparation, significant risks can remain.

Wendy represented her country and pursued a dream she might otherwise have spent a lifetime wondering about.

And despite how it ended, she says she wouldn’t change a thing.

Wendy, your never-say-die attitude, courage and commitment have been remarkable.

What a woman! 👏🥊

A day at @vortexperformanceacademy as a S&C Coach/PT

From general population to combat athletes, HYROX competitors, footballers and endurance athletes, no two sessions are the same. Different goals, different demands, one focus: helping people perform at their best.

That’s what makes Vortex Performance Academy special. More than just a gym, a place where performance, community and coaching come together, with everyone working towards something. Huge shout out to the main man @rygorpaul for making the gym as great as it is 🙌

A long day, plenty of variety, and wouldn’t have it any other way. 🤝
