Do you know that Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria's first Prime Minister, was not originally known by the name Tafawa Balewa. His birth name was simply Abubakar Yakubu. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa's father was Yakubu Dan Zala, a district head in the Bauchi Emirate. The transformation of his name is rooted in a fascinating story from his time at Katsina Teaching College.

During his studies, his teacher noticed that he shared the same name with a classmate, which caused some confusion. To resolve this, the teacher advised both students to adopt unique identifiers for their names. Abubakar chose to use the name Tafawa Balewa, a village in Bauchi State where he grew up. This name became his official identity and followed him throughout his life and career.

The name Tafawa Balewa itself carries a profound meaning. Derived from the Fulani language, it combines the words Tafari (rock) and Baleri (black), translating to "Black Rock." This title not only reflects the rich heritage of his origins but also symbolizes his steadfastness and strength as a leader.

Location: Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Tomb Complex, Bauchi.
