What a way to kick off a weekend full of Special Olympics activities!

Today, two of our very own athletes, along with three family and health advocates, joined Virginia Tech Carilion for a discussion about inclusive healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities. Our panelists provided stories of their experiences and insightful ideas for making medicine more accessible to patients of all abilities, exhibiting one of the many ways Special Olympics reaches people with disabilities in all facets of their life!

A special thank you to Monique Gainey for her tremendous work organizing today’s event!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of presenting alongside past student, and now dietitian colleague, Emily Cox, to third year students at the Virginia Tech Carillion School of Medicine @vtcsom . We presented an outpatient focused case study to demonstrate the utilization of malnutrition screening, food insecurity screening, motivational interviewing, universal precautions for low health literacy, and how/why to refer to registered dietitians. It was a new and different challenge and a great opportunity to guide future physicians to better understand the role of nutrition and dietitians in chronic disease prevention and management.
