A well-deserved congratulations to Alaina Guerry and Heather Mason, this year’s recipients of the Daniel P. Harrington Award for Administrative Excellence!
So much of what makes VTCSOM work happens behind the scenes, and Alaina and Heather are two people who give so much of their time, talent and care in support of our students, faculty and the entire medical school community.
We’re lucky to have them on our team, and grateful for all they do to make VTCSOM a better place every day. by @vtcsom

Meet Noah Perrotte and William Hanger, first-year students at VTCSOM and the first recipients of scholarships made possible by Jim and Augustine Smith’s historic $20 million gift.

For these two future physicians, the support is about more than easing the financial burden of medical school. It’s an opportunity they hope to pay forward through lives and careers dedicated to serving others.

See how the first Smith Family Scholars are turning generosity into purpose and carrying the spirit of Ut Prosim forward: https://news.vt.edu/articles/2026/09/first-smith-family-scholars-look-to-turn-generosity-into-service.html. by @vtcsom

Learning about oral health is one thing. Sitting across from a patient and seeing how serious oral health issues can affect their lives is another.
As part of VTCSOM’s comprehensive oral health curriculum, made possible through the longstanding support of the Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation, students recently spent time in the oral health clinic working through hands-on stations focused on serious oral health conditions.
Students talked with patients, asked questions and learned firsthand about the challenges that can come with complex oral health issues—building skills they can carry into their practice as physicians.
The Delta Dental partnership has helped make clinical training like this a key part of the curriculum, giving future physicians a deeper understanding of the connection between oral health and overall health.
It’s hands-on medical education with a simple goal: helping our students become better equipped to care for the whole patient.
Thank you to Delta Dental of Virginia for investing in the next generation of physicians and helping VTCSOM put oral health where it belongs—in medicine.

Good medicine starts with understanding the whole patient—including their oral health.
Last night, we welcomed Martha Zepeda Rivera, Ph.D., instructor and molecular biologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center, for the 16th Annual Delta Dental Oral Health Endowed Lecture.
Dr. Zepeda Rivera explored the emerging connection between oral microbes and GI tract cancers, highlighting how what happens in the mouth may have implications far beyond it.
It’s exactly the kind of whole-person thinking at the heart of VTCSOM’s comprehensive oral health curriculum.
Made possible through the longstanding support of the Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation, the program integrates oral health into medical education through classroom instruction, clinical training and an annual lecture series bringing leading experts to our students and community.
A great night of science, medicine and a reminder that understanding the whole patient means looking at every part of their health.
Thank you, Dr. Zepeda Rivera and Delta Dental of Virginia!

A little bit of Roanoke, a lot of Hokie spirit!
The Hokie Bird made a special appearance at this year’s Nokie Fair, welcoming our newest VTCSOM and Fralin Biomedical students to the Star City!
From local businesses and nonprofits to wellness resources and plenty of fun, the Nokie Fair is all about helping our students feel at home in their new community. And judging by the Hokie Bird’s day, we think he felt right at home, too!
