🐦💔 BREAKING: THE BIRD HAS FLOWN — BUT HIS SONG WILL NEVER DIE! 💔🐦

*RIP MIGHTY SPARROW — SLINGER FRANCISCO — 1935 - FOREVER* 🇹🇹👑

Tonight, at *Panyard Desk — Panyard Universe — Railway Road, Siparia — Ellis Knights Pan Complex — THE CONCERT CAPITAL OF THE COMMUNITY* — where the tracks ended and the future began — we did not just play a song.

We taught a HISTORY LESSON.

We played his composition *"SLAVE"* — and if you never listened properly, LISTEN NOW. 🚨

*"SLAVE" IS NOT A SONG. IT IS OUR JOURNEY.*

*1. THE PLANTATION* 🪓⛓️
Sugar cane cutting our ancestors' hands. Congo to Trinidad. Shackled. Beaten. Sold.
Sparrow sang: _"You think it was easy? You think we forget?"_ NO!

*2. THE REVOLT* 🔥🥁
They banned our drums! We beat BAMBOO! 🎋
They banned bamboo! We beat STEEL! 🛢️➡️🎶
The tamboo bamboo became the steelpan — TRASH became NATIONAL INSTRUMENT! REVOLT!

*3. THE REBELLION* ✊🏾🗣️
Sparrow became the REBEL VOICE — he told the Massa, he told the Government, he told the world — with a SMILE and a DOUBLE ENTENDRE! Humor as weapon!

*4. THE LIBERATION* 🕊️🧠
Mind! Body! Soul! EVOLUTION!
Liberation is not when chains come off feet — it's when chains come off MIND!
Sparrow freed our minds!

Tonight's Panyard Desk trio:

🥁 *CHE BRITTON — DRUMS* — The Ancestral Pulse — The Plantation Drum That Survived
🎤 *CAROLYN CALLENDER — VOCALS* — The Soul — The Voice That Refused To Be Silent
✨ *AKINOLA SENNON — STEELPAN* — The Revolution & Liberation — Mind, Body, Soul Evolution

*Steelpan at the epicentre.* Not entertainment. *EVOLUTION.* Employing that which is Indigenous. 🚀

Sparrow said it all in SLAVE. One song. 400 years of history.

*BIRDIE, YOU DID YOUR JOB. NOW WE WILL DO OURS. WE WILL NOT LET THEM FORGET.* 🙏🏾

Where the tracks ended, the future began. Panyard Universe.

*RIP BIRDIE. FLIGHT DONE. SONG NEVER DONE.* 🕊️🇹🇹

Drop a 🐦👑 if Sparrow ever taught you something.

*LISTEN TO SLAVE TODAY. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN.*

Kaiso Power: Sound Revolution In Trinidad 1970-1980 🇹🇹

Sensational Roots’ track ‘Calypso Zest’ is featured on the compilation 🎵

In the mid-1970s, the curfews had been lifted and political prisoners were released, but the echoes of Black Power were still felt in the music.

Calypso had moved past simply being the music of Carnival, it was reinvigorated with an urgent new desire for a deeper kind of storytelling that could still rock the dancefloor. Sensational Roots led by Pelham Goddard channelled those core rhythms of the people from Trinidad to the music they created both for live audiences and in studios.

By the 80s, Sensational Roots became Charlie’s Roots, a big-band sound on the Caribbean music scene that launched the career of one of the most prolific and beloved Kaisonians, David Michael Rudder.

Vinyl LP + full Digital album out May 29th. Pre-order via the Soundway Records link in our bio 🔗
