The streets came alive and so did the music 🎶

In the early 1970s, Port of Spain was the epicentre of a movement of students, artists, trade unionists, shaking up the society with marches, Carnival protest bands and armed struggle for justice. And in the recording studios, theatres, panyards a new generation of voices were beginning to be heard. Lancelot Layne, Delano Abdul Malik De Coteau, Andre Tanker, Clive Zanda and Mansa Musa. These weren’t just musicians, they were teachers, community workers, radically shifting the way that music was performed and experienced.

Kaiso Power is a peep into the untapped treasures of a revolutionary generation - the music they made to build consciousness, call for justice and reclaim power for the people.

Kaiso Power: Sound Revolution in Trinidad compilation is a collection of rare calypso and jazz tracks from 1970s-1980s Trinidad and Tobago🇹🇹 The vinyl LP + full album out May 29th.

The @nts_radio Kaiso Power Show is available to listen to now 🇹🇹🔊

Selected by @wajangdiskotheque, the compilers of ‘Kaiso Power: Sound Revolution In Trinidad 1970-1980’.

The tracklist explores the music of 1970s Trinidad as an archive of the shift in consciousness that followed the Black Power Movement. Expect gems from iconic Trinidadian musicians including Andre Tanker, Michael Boothman, Clive Zanda, Ella Andall and Lancelot Layne, alongside poetry from Delano Abdul Malik Decoteau and drumming from Mansa Musa, who were both incarcerated as instigators of the 1970s protests.

In Trinidad and Tobago, Carnival has never been just about the party. Beneath the colour and celebration is a long history of anti-colonial resistance, dating back to the 1830s and the end of enslavement. Music has remained at the heart of movements for self-determination and nation-building, giving rise to globally significant sounds including steelpan, calypso, soca, chutney and rapso.

‘Kaiso Power: Sound Revolution In Trinidad 1970-1980’ is available on vinyl via the Soundway store and selected retailers, and on all streaming platforms.

From Trinidad to Hamburg — and Back. 🇹🇹 ↔ 🇩🇪

Allllyuhhhhh, help us welcome our good friend Björn Wagner of Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band back to Trinidad!

More than 20 years ago, Björn came here as a student and was introduced to the steelpan — an experience that stayed with him and later became part of what shaped Bacao’s sound in Hamburg.

It’s a family reunion happening in Trinidad this time…the last time it was in Hamburg when The Wajang Diskotheque played some records at one of Bacao’s Hamburg shows

Björn is here to reconnect with the local music community (oh gorm, yes we go carry him for doubles) share some of his experience with students, collaborate with musicians here and start working on new music.

For us, that’s really what this project is about: bringing people together, exchanging ideas and seeing what can grow from that.

WAJANG × BACAO

A project by The Wajang Diskotheque, supported by the German Embassy Port of Spain.

When the marches ended for the night in Port of Spain, the revolution moved to the Carnival fetes and steelband yards.

Soundway and Trinidad’s Wajang Diskotheque dig deep into that world. Rare jazz, calypso and percussion from the politically conscious 70s generation, from artists who were teachers and community workers as much as musicians.

Opens with Clive Zanda and Michael Boothman back to back. That should tell you enough. Essential comp! by @wajangdiskotheque

OUT TODAY: Kaiso Power: Sound Revolution in Trinidad 1970 – 1980 🇹🇹

Ten rare calypso, jazz and percussive selections from the early 70s and 80s. Compiled by @wajangdiskotheque.

Kaiso Power opens a window into the revolution unfolding in Trinidad & Tobago during the 1970s - 1980s, when music was created to raise consciousness, challenge the system and reclaim power for the people.

Musicians like Lancelot Layne, Abdul Malik de Coteau, Andre Tanker, Clive Zanda and Mansa Musa used music as a tool for change 🎵

Lancelot Layne - Umbawa is a track featured on the compilation.

Lancelot Layne was a leading voice in the movement for change, active in marches and community events across Trinidad. As protests peaked in 1970, his song Blow’ Way became an unexpected anthem for a society confronting itself. Layne continued pushing radio stations to make space for a new sound rooted in Trinidad’s national language, using music to educate and empower. A key voice in the fight for an Emancipation holiday, he also scored the first reenactment of the Canboulay Riots in 1984, a year before Trinidad’s first official Emancipation Day. As told in this interview with the late Lutalo Masimba, known in the music world as Brother Resistance, Lancelot Layne played a central role in influencing the sound that became known as rapso.

Get the vinyl now via the Soundway store & selected stores and on all streaming platforms.

Kaiso Power: Sound Revolution In Trinidad 1970-1980 🇹🇹

Sensational Roots’ track ‘Calypso Zest’ is featured on the compilation 🎵

In the mid-1970s, the curfews had been lifted and political prisoners were released, but the echoes of Black Power were still felt in the music.

Calypso had moved past simply being the music of Carnival, it was reinvigorated with an urgent new desire for a deeper kind of storytelling that could still rock the dancefloor. Sensational Roots led by Pelham Goddard channelled those core rhythms of the people from Trinidad to the music they created both for live audiences and in studios.

By the 80s, Sensational Roots became Charlie’s Roots, a big-band sound on the Caribbean music scene that launched the career of one of the most prolific and beloved Kaisonians, David Michael Rudder.

Vinyl LP + full Digital album out May 29th. Pre-order via the Soundway Records link in our bio 🔗
