Custom 🏺 based on Sufi poem, The Conference of the Birds or Speech of the Birds (منطق الطیر; 1177)by the poet Farid ud-Din Attar, commonly known as Attar of Nishapur.

✨ Passing through a long and treacherous journey, the thirty bravest birds of the land embark to find the Simorgh, he who has been prophesied to be the King. The birds traverse together through the Seven Valleys: Search, Love, Mystic Apprehension, Detachment/Independence, Unity, Bewilderment, and Fulfilment in Annihilation. At last once they have purified their souls and reached their new king, the Simorgh, the birds are turned back, to then be finally allowed into his court when they realize the Simorgh they had been searching for was none other than themselves. The allegorical poem hinges on a pun in Farsi, only thirty (si) birds (morgh) are left at the end of the Way, and the si morgh meet the Simorgh, the goal of their quest.

🕊️ Here is a little excerpt of the beautiful poem, a guide to self-realization and purification of the self (نفس) through Divine Love (عشق). We find our eternal return to the Beloved (God) only in the realization that He is reflected in all that He has created, most importantly in the shell of our hearts.

“The people of this world are like the three butterflies
in front of a candle’s flame.

The first one went closer and said:
I know about love.

The second one touched the flame
lightly with his wings and said:
I know how love’s fire can burn.

The third one threw himself into the heart of the flame
and was consumed. He alone knows what true love is.”

✨ May we have the courage to be baptized in the fiery waters of Love.

Shaybandar Cafe: The Martyrs Cafe custom tattoo for Toka 🇮🇶

Shaybandar Café is a one of the oldest and most famous coffee and tea shops in Baghdad, Iraq. Established in 1907 as printing shop, Shaybandar is a beacon of Iraqi culture and space of radical scholarship. Academic, thinkers, and scholars, poets and artists alike have met at this café located in Iraq’s intellectual hub, Al Muttanabi street. As a radical community space Shaybandar held concerts playing traditionally Iraqi maqam, returning all the proceeds to charity in Baghdad. Likewise, in 1948, protesters gathered at the cafe to hold political demonstrations against the Anglo-Iraqi treaty creating the British mandate (occupation) of Iraq.

During the US occupation of Iraq, Mutanabbi street was bombed, Shaybandar was completely destroyed and 100 martyrs ascended. Owner, Al-Khashali lost four of his sons and his grandson in the explosion. In the traditional resilient Iraq fashion the cafe is was rebuilt, as was Mutanabbi street gaining a new name: The Martyrs Cafe.

Shaybandar stands as bold image of the revolutionary, intellectual and resilience that my beloved homeland holds. The pain of loss can never be erased, but the will to allow pain’s carving knife to be space of creation and recreation is the very meaning of resilience.
