Hello folks,

It's been a long time. And a lot has happened since we last spoke.

The long and short of it is that I've either been in a recording studio or asleep since the new year..!

I should probably sleep more, but instead I've been lucky enough to work with some incredibly talented artists up and down the UK so far this year.

Much of the time, I've been holed away at @valestudiosuk, @chem19studio and my own studio (more on that soon) working on something incredible with @waltdisco for @luckynumbermusic.

I then managed to capture some smouldering new tracks from Edinburgh's @bikinibodymusic , a transcendent, emotional collection of songs from @lloydshouse, an international choir (that we recruited from the pub) for a new @michaelcassidymusic album, an EP from @vcoband and new singles from @stdukes_ at the best small studio in the world, @greendoor_studio !

I've also just had my favourites, @gagsalonband back for a whirlwind weekend recording some truly warped new music.

There's also been a few releases lately I've been a part of that I'm really proud of:

My favourite Bristolian's @minor_conflict released their first single that I produced & mixed on the much vaunted @prahrecordings label.

The first single from @the.joyhotel 's debut album that I produced & mixed, Jeremiah dropped the other day with some exclusive content that's already sold out.

@cestbiggirlsblouse released a couple of tracks that I produced and mixed from a forthcoming EP (kudos to @rosie.sco & @emmy.o__o for the best artwork I've seen for a while).

@flatparty_ released two killer singles on @subcatmusic that I had the pleasure of mixing.

@kyoto.kyoto1 released a double-a-side 7" on @blitzcatrecords that was a blast to produced and mix. London pals, go see them live.

And soon-to-be cult heroes @stonymacs released their latest single I produced and mixed from a forthcoming EP!

In between all that I've also been playing some drums for @elephantinred!

Currently looking for exciting sounds to sink my teeth into and wrap my ears around from June onwards.

Hit me up if you want to talk about making a record together.

I hope this finds you well,

Love,
Chris.

UNLEARNING – WALT DISCO

Unlearning is the debut album of the goth-glam experience that is Walt Disco. Released on April Fool’s Day 2022, Unlearning has secured its place on the shortlist to win the Scottish Album of the Year Award and is the final entry in this miniseries of reviews ahead of this year's ceremony.

The album opens on the resonate ‘Weightless’, that sets up the album beautifully, after that the hits don’t stop coming. ‘Selfish Lover’ is joyfully vindictive and ‘Cut Your Hair’ has been a calling card for the band since its release all the way back in 2020.

The star of the early run of singles to open the LP is probably ‘How Cool Are You?’, which is intriguing and off-kilter in the same way a fun-house mirror is. The repeated ‘la la la’s in the backing vocals and the celeste and cheering hidden deeper in the mix gives the song an intentionally childish quality…possibly a tongue-in-cheek nod to how it feels to care about coolness post-school.

After the hypnotic ‘Be An Actor’ the momentum of the album slows down somewhat but manages to end on a high note with the final two tracks ‘Macilent’ and ‘If I Had A Perfect Life’.

Walt Disco have expertly crafted an album that is a celebration of youth and individuality. Unlearning is sonically diverse, colourful and always unexpected, hopefully that is more than enough to secure it the title of Scottish Album of the Year tomorrow night.
