What a sacred moment it is to sit with a scent, mapping its secret color, form, and texture. It is nothing less than the soul of the flower, awakened inside a tiny bottle.

A day well spent at Manthan Samvaad, India's most respected forums for free and fearless public discourse.

Designed as a "watering hole" for curious minds, Manthan brings together public intellectuals, journalists, legal experts, artists, policymakers, and citizens for a day of unfiltered conversations on issues that shape our society.

The 2026 edition featured powerful voices including television journalist Karan Thapar, author & filmmaker Subroto Chattopadhyay, digital rights activist Apar Gupta, Supreme court advocate and legal expert Shahrukh Alam, investigative journalist Poonam Agarwal, Professor of South Asian History Farhat Hasan, musicians MR Sharan, and Swaroop, who explored themes of democracy, dissent, digital rights, history, culture, free speech, and the urgent need to preserve institutions that safeguard democratic values.

In contemporary India, the significance of a forum like Manthan is profound. It serves as a rare safe space for free speech, encouraging nuance over soundbites, reflection over reaction, and dialogue over division.

At a time when public discourse is increasingly polarized, often driven by outrage, forums like these remind us that meaningful conversations can flourish without constraints, fear of reprisals, or the need for conformity. That the health of a democracy can often be measured by the quality of its conversations

Truly grateful to those who create and sustain these kinds of spaces.

I left with more questions than answers, and perhaps that's the point.

Among rocks that took millions of years to form, I found myself holding something equally ancient and unexpectedly fragile.

I carried a few vials of attar to the granite hills of Khajaguda, the kind of landscape that has accompanied me since childhood. Surrounded by monolithic boulders and an ever-changing skyline, I sat quietly working on and documenting the precious fragrances. Quietly and gently, a solemn thought wafted by… unsettling me.

The flowers, roots, woods, grasses, and resins that give birth to these attars are also tied to landscapes. To seasons. To ecosystems. To ways of knowing that have been passed from one generation to the next. Like these ancient rocks, they appear enduring but are more fragile than we imagine. Perhaps this is true everywhere now. Forests give way to roads, fields to buildings, horizons to skylines. We celebrate growth but more often mourn what disappears in its wake.

As towers rise around these hills, transforming the skyline and reshaping the horizon, their twinkling lights no longer seem warm or capable of illuminating us from within. Pandora's box is open. Hope seems weary.

But at that moment, the fragrances in my hands felt different. They were no longer simply scents or sensory experiences, but our treasure archive.

Each attar seemed to carry traces of a place, a climate, a craft tradition, and generations of knowledge, a living inheritance.

The deeper I go into this project, the more I realize I am not simply researching and painting scents. I am tracing fragile connections between people, places, landscapes, and memory before they fade from view. I am following the traces of things we love, inherit, and often lose without noticing… much like fragrances.

Sitting between an ancient landscape and a rapidly transforming city, I was reminded that some forms of heritage are held not in monuments or museums, but in a breath. That some forms of heritage may be carved in stone, but some linger in the air, waiting to be remembered.

A late-night pilgrimage to Charminar...

Drawn not by its lights or architecture, but by its invisible map of scents. The air carried notes of ittar, oudhbatti, baqoor, agarbatti, rain, flowers, wet asphalt, food and passing memories. Every lane seemed to hold a fragrance, every fragrance a story.

What fascinates me about scent is its ability to bypass reason and travel straight to memory... unlocking a forgotten street, a childhood passtime, or the presence of someone long gone.

I stepped into an old attar and incense shop, exploring different varieties of frankincense and watching their fragrant smoke curl through the air like memories made visible. In another tiny shop, I found a beautiful Khus attar, adding it to my ever-growing collection of attars and ruhs. Each bottle feels less like a fragrance and more like a fragment of cultural memory.

As an artist exploring the cultural life of scent, I found myself following aromas rather than roads, discovering a different kind of heritage, one breathed in rather than seen.

Perhaps memories do not live in photographs alone. Perhaps they wait patiently in scent, until one breath is enough to bring them home.

Old cities reveal themselves through monuments... Hyderabad today revealed itself through fragrance.

Over the past year, artistic practice has taken me deep into the world of fragrances and olfactory traditions as part of my ongoing project. While painting remains at the heart of the work, I felt it was important to develop a more structured understanding of fragrance itself: its materials, science, construction, method, behaviour, application and ultimately the experience of it all.

I am pleased to share that I have successfully completed the Fragrance & Flavour Creation & Application certification program offered by the Fragrance & Flavour Development Centre (FFDC), Kannauj, a Government of India institution dedicated to the advancement of fragrance and flavour sciences.

This study has significantly strengthened the research foundation of the project. It provided a valuable foundation in fragrance evaluation, raw materials, composition, and sensory analysis, helping me deepen my understanding of the materials that are informing the work. These insights add another layer of rigor to my process of observing, documenting, and translating the intangible language into a tangible one.

My sincere thanks to Mr. Shakti Vinay Shukla, Mr. Ashish Jhunjhunwalla, Ms. Saswati Lahiri, esteemed faculty and industry experts spanning FFDC, Givaudan, AFFAROM, Fragrances & Flavors Association of India (FAFAI), dsm fermich, and many more.

Thank you FFDC for creating such valuable educational programs and for their efforts in democratizing fragrance knowledge in India. Initiatives like these are helping cultivate a deeper appreciation of India's extraordinary perfumery heritage while inspiring a new generation of practitioners, researchers, and creative thinkers.

The research phase continues, but the studio calls.

Some conversations don't give answers; they open doors. This was one of them.

I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time in conversation with Nicolas Roth (@nic_in_the_garden), whose work beautifully bridges the worlds of gardens, plants, fragrance, literature, visual culture, and the sensory histories of South Asia.

A Harvard scholar, horticulturist, plant lover, and a historian of Mughal garden culture and horticultural traditions, Nicolas has an extraordinary ability to reveal how flowers, fragrances, landscapes, poetry, and paintings once existed as inter-connected worlds rather than separate disciplines.

Our online discussion opened up a few more new pathways for me as I continue developing my ongoing series of paintings inspired by fragrances.

What began for me as an exploration of scent and painting is steadily evolving into a deeper inquiry into memory, heritage, material culture, and the histories embedded within fragrance.

Conversations such as these remind me that every scent carries far more than aroma... it carries stories of gardens, trade, botany, ritual, architecture, literature, and lived experience.

Thank you, Nicolas, for your generosity of time and insights. I look forward to continuing our journey, and to discovering how these threads might find their way into the work in the months ahead.

Weekend mornings go fragrant and slow... as I slow dig my library and archives.

Oh! How much I'm loving this magazine by Marg, dedicated to indigenous scents and fragrances.

The scent of my soul. The place that started it all. My lone time in the magical mountains of Mussoorie where scents moved me beyond my comfort zone. Where I saw more that what my eyes could see. And dreamt more that what dreams could be.

In the misty mountains, I was left to my devices to wander, forage and gather scents and memories that I wanted to preserve forever. But that also made me realise that scents are best when they are fleeting and passing by.

Just let them be.
Just let them go.
