🌿 Ferns: harmless-looking… or secretly dangerous?

You might walk straight past a fern without giving it a second thought. But these ancient-looking plants have inspired some wonderfully strange stories — and even a full-blown craze.

In Poland, it was once believed that pulling up a fern would cause terrible thunderstorms. ⛈️🌿 Best leave them where they are, then!

And in the 1850s, “fern fever” swept through Britain, parts of America and beyond. Ferns became wildly fashionable and people became fern hunters, searching for rare varieties to add to their collections.

Some took their hunting rather seriously — climbing steep rocks, scrambling into gorges and leaning over fast-flowing rivers to get their prize. Not surprisingly, there were a few accidents along the way! 😬

Eventually, so many people were collecting ferns that some areas had too few left, and laws were introduced in parts of the English countryside to stop people digging them up.

So next time you spot a fern, take a closer look. You’re looking at a plant that once caused thunderstorms, inspired a Victorian obsession and sent people scrambling into some seriously dangerous places. 🔎🌿

A little reminder that you don’t need to spend lots of money to make memories 🥹🧡

Sometimes the simplest things are the most magical 🍂🎃 A little pumpkin hunt in the forest and toasting marshmallows… memories that money can’t buy ✨

Why sharing folk beliefs, folk magic practices and traditions is important to me

I share what I know freely and with eagerness, and sometimes folks get uptight about it and think I shouldn’t, so I figured it was maybe time to put out my stall, so to speak and why I have been sharing what I have been sharing for over a decade (almost two!) …

Firstly, I only know what I know because it has been shared with me. Through works of art, down the pub, research, conversations, events, stories, teaching, archives or performance. My knowledge is based on connections to others and by sharing things I honour all that and them. I will always say where it came from by name if I can.

Our folk beliefs and folk customs survive a lot like local herbal traditions did, on the backs of people who hold a wee bit of the story, knowledge and the beliefs (pre-Western herbalism here). This means the ONLY reason some of it survived is that in one way or another it was shared with others - so to honour this I want to make sure our Scottish cultural practices are in as many hands as possible.

I rationalise to myself this approach helps keep practices, traditions, beliefs and the how-to alive; I believe sharing helps democratise things - I think if everyone knows how to do this or that, the likelihood of someone coming along saying I have “special knowledge” is a lot less likely - sharing evens out the playing field and keeps things in the open.

I believe working class practices should be available to anyone with an interest, and in this way disincentivise people to make money from them. Cus you can’t profit off common knowledge unless you enclose it in one way or another, and making it rare is a form of enclosure; using fancy panst academic language is another form of enclosure. Granted, certain people or traditions do things a certain way, and I have never and will never share things they have asked me not to; it is theirs to share as are my own traditions and ways of understanding, but outside of this I’ll share what I can to keep it living and vital.

We just HAD to repost this brilliant reel from @wandermaw from her visit to the playground yesterday! THIS is Baltic Street Adventure Playground ❤️

We're open today from 11am - 5pm so get the wellies and waterproofs on and come visit us!

"I won’t lie, it’s mental, it’s not like a playpark, it’s a safe enclosed space but kids are running around crazy, having the best time and as an adult you need a moment to adjust to it. Soon as we arrived they all ran off in different directions. They met their friends and made new ones, the kids really took to repeatedly climbing a wee platform and jumping off onto a pile of covered mattress 😂 only stopping every so often for a drink or a quick snack. There were a few grown ups looking uptight at the kids launching themselves down the hill in an old shopping trolley. Risky play all day. I’ve never been anywhere like it, I loved getting involved by hauling the kids through the air on a tyre swing via a pulley 😂

Friendly Play worker Jade welcomed us in, took our names and a contact number and off we went to explore. It’s changed a bit since we were here last, the layout remains the same but they have added a sandpit, fire pits, small animal enclosures, a raised bed area, aswell as toilets and the rest. For anyone who has never been before, what was once a derelict piece of land is now a community greenspace designed with play as a priority. Old school, outdoor, unstructured play with the tyre swings, rope swings, tunnels, pallets, tarp forts and so much more! All FREE of charge. As if this isn’t enough, everyone in attendance receives a FREE hot lunch all through the Summer, served around 1:30ish. Through school holidays it is usually open Tue-Sat 11-5pm, check the website. My team ate well, snacks and drinks, being told ‘Come back for more if you’re still hungry!’ 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

A massive thank you to the dedicated BSAP staff who make this place extra special, a team of the kindest most down to earth folk who don’t shy away from anything. Helping build dens, climb trees, cook and dish out food and support the wee folk all year. Good vibes all round! I’m buzzing to return! 🍃✨🙌🏻"
