i was just looking at the gorse and accidentally stumbled on dinner time 😂🕷️

An orb-web spider has just caught a fly, wrapped it up and is getting right to it.

This is exactly why I love looking closely. There’s a whole wild world happening in the hedge if you actually stop and watch. 🕸️🌿

Tiny. Blue an ancient 👀
•
I found these wee slate-blue springtails on the school gate yesterday and had to investigate.
•
their lineage stretches back around 400 million years.
That’s just a minute before the dinosaurs 🤣
•
They’re not actually insects either. They’re tiny arthropods called Collembola, and they’ve been quietly getting on with their business for a super long time.
•
Some have a spring-loaded structure called a furcula that can launch them away when disturbed. Like ancient microscopic parkour.
•
And this is exactly why I love looking closely at nature.
•
A wee creature on a wall can lead you 400 million years back into Earth’s history. A patch of moss can become a whole ecosystem. A leaf can send you down a rabbit hole of chemistry, weather, folklore and wildlife.
•
You don’t need to travel somewhere spectacular to find something fascinating.
•
Sometimes you just need to stop, get curious and look a wee bit closer. The investigation continues.
•

Looks like someone got bored halfway through trimming this hedge! 🌿
•
But leaving some sections uncut is actually great hedge management. A well-managed hedge isn’t necessarily one that’s chopped back all at once. Rotating sections, leaving some growth and avoiding unnecessary cutting can help maintain a mix of dense cover, flowers, berries and different-aged growth.
•
That means more opportunities for birds, insects and other wee hedge-dwellers to feed, shelter and move through the landscape 🌿🐦🐝
•
So older thicker sections provide valuable nesting and overwintering habitat as the newer growth keeps the hedge vigorous.
•
So when you see a hedge that looks a bit patchy or uneven, it might not be neglected.
•
Someone might be managing it with wildlife in mind👀✨🌿

This is Kenilworth Ivy (or ivy leaved toadflax)
Found today on the school wall.
It’s tiny & super cute, I absolutely love the shape of the wee leaves. Part of the plantain family, in European countries they eat it like a wee salad flower but it is mildly toxic.

Lots changing around us, trees, weather, behaviour.
Looks a bit closer, look under and around.
•
I always find something worth spotting and learning about!
