Willson Chivhanga, @leah_wanjiru_muiruri, @otiienosamson, thank you for making time to meet Kenyan storytellers yesterday. We’re looking forward to the conference later this month, from 27 October to 1 November.

"Afrika does not lack storytellers. What it lacks is a structure of power that allows those storytellers to tell their stories on their own terms, to their own communities, without routing their narratives through institutions and funding systems that have their own interests in how Afrika is framed." - Afroteller.org

Wangari The Storyteller @wangarithestoryteller will be bringing stories, imagination and lots of fun to learners at Karuri Primary School and Kibathi Primary School — alongside the donation of 350 storybooks to each school. Because sometimes, all a child needs is a good story, a listening ear, and a little room to imagine.

Monday, 15th September

Here’s to inspiring a culture of reading, one story and one child at a time.

Jesse’s favourite book in the library is The Lollipop Stranger.

When we asked what the story had taught him, he said:“I should not accept gifts from strangers.”

That’s one of the reasons books matter. Stories can introduce children to situations they may one day encounter and give them the confidence to recognize what is safe, what isn’t, and when to seek help.

Every child deserves access to books that help them understand and navigate the world around them.

Help us put more of these books into the hands of children.

Every year, we turn away book donations on purpose.

Because our libraries run on locally authored and age appropriate storybooks. Kenyan names, Kenyan streets, grandmothers telling proverbs by the fire. Give a kid a choice, and they'll pick that one every time.

Why? A child who's never seen snow has to imagine it while a child who's ridden a matatu knows it.

That recognition does the work. Faster vocabulary, easier comprehension, and a kid who starts believing their own life is worth putting in a book.

So we say no sometimes, even to generous donors. A full shelf isn't the win. A win is when a child opens a book and understands its contents because it is written in a known context is.

What Kenyan storybook did you grow up loving? Let us know in the comments.
