As we look forward to a new semester we would like to announce and welcome our new colleague Wansoo Kim who will be joining us as an Assistant Professor of Ceramics here at KCAI. Wansoo will be teaching in the sophomore, junior and senior sculpture curriculum. We are so excited that he will be a part of the team helping to shape the program. We have already been hard at work arranging studios and prepping everything for the semester. Wansoo is originally from South Korea. He earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Nebraska and his BFA in Ceramic Art and Design from Seoul National University of Science and Technology. He previously taught at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville. Welcome aboard Wansoo 👏 🎉

My house is not a quiet place but it’s full of jostling love. Got to stand out around here. ecstatic to welcome a noisy neighbor, 𝑻𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 by @wansoo_kim into the mix.

So happy and proud to see my peer @wansoo_kim move over to @kcartinstitute. Every life change brings forth new life and who can’t be excited to see the strange honest loving work Wansoo will make up where the tornados start and football dreams whither. Safe travels Haleigh and Wansoo!

Visiting Jun Kaneko’s studio was an unforgettable experience, and it gave me a lot to think about regarding my own ties to Cranbrook Academy of Art. If I’m honest, I’ve always carried somewhat mixed feelings about my time in the MFA program. Being a photo guy surrounded by dedicated ceramicists made me the odd one out, and trying to develop my own work in that environment was an uphill battle.

While walking through his studio, I asked Jun how his time at Cranbrook had influenced his art. His answer was so simple and direct. He told me, “Cranbrook did nothing to my works, but it changed my lifestyle as an artist.”

We were obviously at very different points in our careers there—he was already a famous, established artist when he taught there, while I was just a student trying to figure things out. But his words really hit home. I realized that my graduate school experience did exactly the same thing for me. Cranbrook may not have been a perfectly comfortable incubator for my photo and ceramics fusion projects at the time, but the friction of being there fundamentally changed my discipline, my attitude, and how I live as a working artist today. I had the chance to go to some incredible, dedicated photography programs with perfect deals back then, but looking back, choosing to step completely out of my comfort zone was the right decision.

I’m incredibly grateful for the time he spent talking with me and my group. Seeing his space and hearing his perspective didn’t just inspire me; it helped me finally appreciate the real value of my education and attitude.

Grateful for the chance to visit Jun Kaneko’s studio. Seeing work at that scale in person was genuinely inspiring, and getting to share the day with such a great group made it even more memorable.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible 🙏

Here is a look back at our first KCECA meeting!
While it was a small group, it was a truly worthwhile first step in bringing our Korean ceramics community together.

Thanks to all who committed to this meeting.

“Porcelain Lemons”, slip cast porcelain, 2026.

Inspired by generosity and abundance. On view @westmontridleytreemuseum now through June 20th.

In California you’ve probably walked past houses with a bowl out front full of free lemons from their overflowing tree.🍋 love that!

Big thanks to @qwistjoseph for showing me how to make these back in the day! 🙏
