Life update: I am excited to share that I will be joining the faculty this fall at the Kansas City Art Institute as an Assistant Professor of Ceramics! I’m looking forward to teaching alongside @pauldonnellyceramics and @caseywhittier. It’s an honor to join this historic program, and I can’t wait to work with the students there. Kansas City is @haleigh_presta’s hometown, so we’re happy to be back and close to family again. I was able to show my sister-in-law around the @kcartinstitute campus in July. To all ceramics folks, friends and family— if you’re in KC and want to meet up, please reach out! taken in Kansas City, Missouri by @wansoo_kim

This piece is in the NCECA Annual, Absence Takes Form, @wassermanprojects, juried by Adrienne Spinozzi, Associate Curator in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum. If you are around Detroit this week, please come see the show 🙏

“Absence Takes Form explores how artists express their individual diasporic journeys in clay, taking its inspiration from Detroit, a place with a rich history shaped by the Great Migration. All diaspora and migrations are complex negotiations between gain and loss, defined by displacement, memory, and promise. These formative life experiences can offer fertile inspiration to artists, and the works in this exhibition give voice and physical space to ancestral memories by turning absence into a three-dimensional form. This reparative work is expressed in myriad ways, including acknowledging a life lived, embracing visual signifiers of one’s identity, honoring and preserving cultural techniques and traditions, and engaging in a conceptual practice that reconstructs the past anew. In this exhibition, artists engage in the act of processing their memory of an ancestral homeland through creation. Absence takes form.” taken in Wasserman Projects by @wansoo_kim

Excited to be a part of one of the NCECA’s featured exhibition, BODYSHOP, curated by @qwistjoseph and @cwestsculpture at @scarabclubdetroit . This is my newest piece I worked on this year. So many amazing works by lots of artists included in the show. Please come say hello! Opening reception is Thursday 6-8pm.

Body Shop explores contemporary interpretations of the human body and its relationship to clay, inviting viewers to reconsider ideas of repair, beautification, and the deep interconnectedness of human experience. This exhibition features a group of artists who are boldly reimagining the metaphors and meanings surrounding one of art history’s oldest subjects: the human figure. by @wansoo_kim

March 13th, 12pm-5pm Ceramic Artist Talk and Demo Workshop with exhibiting artists @wansoo_kim and @hayunsurl, at @blafferartmuseum in conjunction with current show “The Uncanny In-Between” curated by @kangssorha

Ceramic artists Wansoo Kim and Hayun Surl, both originally from Korea, explore shifting cultural identity through vessel and figurative forms, using clay as a record keeper of their journeys. In this workshop hosted by the Blaffer Art Museum, each artist will demonstrate their distinct approaches, with Surl focusing on wheel throwing and Kim on handbuilding, while discussing how their processes reflect personal narratives and migration experiences. For both artists, the dialogue between interior and exterior space serves as a conceptual framework for visual storytelling, expressing the diasporic tension and layered complexities of their Korean American identities.

I am so honored to be a part of the group exhibition “The Uncanny In Between” curated by Sso-Rha Kang @kangssorha at @blafferartmuseum. This is special as i got to work with Sso-Rha, the museum team, Univ. of Cincinnati’s NFT team, and my amazing fellow artists @hayunsurl @audrey.an @haewsohn and my mentor Hoon Lee. The show includes physical works and 3d scanned works from each of us. I am currently headed to Houston and will be at the opening this Saturday 1-4pm. Please come say hello if you are around.

The Uncanny In-Between is an exhibition and archival project that explores a diverse range of works from five Korean ceramic artists that negotiate the complexities of bicultural identities and perspectives.

Despite the commonality of Korean heritage, these artists navigate the nuances of cross-cultural influences culling from personal, familial, and cultural histories. This exhibition will showcase subversive forms that playfully weave mythology, traditional techniques, and technological interventions.

In addition to the physical works in this exhibition are digital extensions of the objects that were created in collaboration with the University of Cincinnati’s NFT Media Lab. The resulting digital assets aim to highlight works that were limited by the physical constraints of viewing in a gallery and to allow for alternative ways to observe, interact, and study.

Oscillating between the material and immaterial, The Uncanny In-Between pays homage to the traditions of Korean ceramics but with a contemporary twist—from a split moon jar, a hybrid monster table, a guardian figurine, to a linguistic and figurative play on “pears”.

The exhibition features work by Audrey An, Wansoo Kim, Hoon LEE, Hayun Surl, and Hae Won Sohn.
