On New Year’s Day I signed up to go mussel foraging with friends on the beach at Keurbooms. An incredibly cheap licence gives you permission to spend the gloriously crisp early morning knee-deep in the low tide, picking nature’s bounty off the massive boulders, and then to feast like a king that very evening. (We have a chef in the group which, as you can imagine, raises the mussel bar significantly.) You need nothing more than a pair of gloves and a good knife, and you can probably do without these implements. I was also under the impression you need both your contact lenses. I somehow lost one before setting off on my adventure and wondered if I should call it all off and spend the day in regret that I had also left my glasses at home. But it was New Year’s Day and I am annually exercised by the idea that I should begin the year as I intend to continue. Which, in this case, was practically blind in one eye. I would not make it into pilot school. I braced myself for disaster and decided to continue with the single contact lens because what will happen to my year if I let the obstacle of shortsightedness impede my progress? Call it faulty logic or an inordinately high tolerance for superstition in my thinking, but I stand by my decision. With my single trusty contact lens I ventured out to my car, drove myself to Keurbooms from Plett, and made my way onto the beach behind Enrico’s and the beautiful new cottages the Babylonstoren folks have erected to demonstrate what tremendous style looks like in a beach setting. Let me report, it was the best decision I could have made. | Grootbos: Where the flowers steal the show “Our open-air game vehicle continued to ascend the mountain road, providing new vistas of the mythically beautiful Overberg landscapes at every turn. We spotted shallow tarns reflecting the clouds on their silky surfaces, distant mountain ridges appearing and then disappearing behind low-hanging clouds, and then what we came to see — pockets of flowering fynbos. In these hectares of fynbos belts lies the true magic of @grootbos: the most florally diverse place on earth, with almost ethereal scenes in every direction…” [ My recent piece for @wantedonlinesa is now out, following the award-winning SA fynbos show in London, to it’s origin in South Africa at @grootbos - a proud @thelongrunorg property]

The @wantedonlinesa December Gift issue dropped yesterday (still available at the back, at the shops). I wrote about my recent trip with @qatarairways to Baku, Azerbaijan for the F1 race. I took in some Zaha Hadid architecture; a presidential classic car collection; got unprecedented access to Team Alpine; experienced some Max intensity; caught flashes of Hamilton; nearly got run over by George Russell; met Jean Alesi and took a selfie with Flavio Briatore. #fi #visitqatar #paddockclubf1 #flashback #wantedmagazinesa

What a difference a day makes. In March, Tesla was in a literal crash-and-burn situation all over the place. Disillusioned owners watched their mobile virtue-signalling device conflagrate before their eyes as Elon Musk became ever more erratically enthused by the prospect of unlimited access to the US federal government and the idea that he could bankroll almost any right-wing politician with a yen for power. The whole “jumping around on the world stage in a Top Gun ensemble” shtick was cut short when he was summarily dismissed from the White House and press-ganged into what some might have considered his actual day job — running his companies, Xing aggressively, and making the babies. It all paid off spectacularly. Just before we went to print, he was handsomely rewarded for his efforts: if he actually does what he says he intends to do — namely, create an army of robots and self-driving cars — he will become the world’s first trillionaire. And then, God help us all as the world’s richest bloke goes balls to the wall. (Read the rest of my Ed’s note via the link in profile) Meanwhile what a sparkling joy - our bumper Haute- Watches and Jewels issue is out today . Every edition I realise what a treat and a priceless privilege it is to work with the brilliant creative team that makes all the magic happen.
