Luxury wellness brand, 23 By Noah (@23bynoah) opened up Design Week (@designweeksouthafrica) at True Design (@true_design_sa) in Johannesburg with the launch for a new product, The First Fire.

An olfactory concentrate designed to be used with the Gypsum Incense Stone, The First Fire brings the ritual of scent into your routine. With notes of myrrh, cinnamon, vetiver and imphepo and a nostalgic burnt, bonfire scent - the concentrate brings one of the most ancient scents of African ancestral knowledge and culture into a new modern expression.

Taking inspiration from Khoi San ancestral heritage and the symbolism of fire; from ritual to rebirth - a few drops of the concentrate onto the stone immerses you into a true African sanctuary.

Let's clear something up: Cap Classique isn't Champagne. And that's pretty much the point. 🥂

South African sunshine, fresh acidity and ripe fruit give our homegrown bubbles their own personality. But what happens when Graham Beck (@grahambeckbubbly) takes its sparkling-wine expertise to English shores?

Cellarmaster Pierre de Klerk (@plattelandpierre) shares four things worth knowing about Cap Classique. Then, read how Graham Beck put its know-how to the test with its first-ever English sparkling wine. 👀 A little South African sunshine meets English chalk.

Sometimes moving forward means returning to your roots. 🌱

After almost 30 years, Jacques van der Watt has streamlined Black Coffee to bring the business back to what matters: the craft.

With fewer distractions, he has more room for the things that have always defined Black Coffee: considered construction, experimentation, a distinctive design language and a clear sense of what the brand stands for. As Jacques puts it: “I am truly making what I want to make.”

His SS26 collection, Off-Grid, reflects that renewed focus, building on the language of previous collections while pushing it somewhere new.

Earlier this year, our beauty editor Nokubonga Thusi (@knox_thusi_) met Tumelo Noah, founder of 23 by Noah (@23bynoah), to talk about body care, ancestral knowledge, African ingredients and the rituals that bring us back to ourselves.

Now, 23 by Noah is entering a new chapter and we have a feeling it’s going to be rather atmospheric. 👀

As part of Design Week (@designweeksouthafrica), the South African wellness brand is set to unveil The First Fire, a new expression inspired by the warmth of amber and a deeper connection to Southern Africa. But what exactly is it?

A new ritual? A new scent? Something to wear? Something to burn? Or something entirely unexpected? 🔥

Take your best guess in the comments. We’ll be there on Thursday to find out.

What makes a photograph stay with you? 📷

For Santu Mofokeng, it was never just about what was in the frame. His work found the political in the personal, the poetic in the everyday and the stories that sat just beyond the obvious.

The inaugural Santu Mofokeng Foundation (@santumofokengfoundation) Photography Prize is looking for emerging photographers with a perspective of their own.

The prize includes R100 000, editorial support, an artist profile and opportunities for future presentation through Latitudes. Applications close 15 October.

What does it mean to make the art world feel more accessible?

For Julia Buchanan (@juliadianabuchanan), it means supporting emerging artists through Art School Africa (@artschoolafrica), bringing new audiences into Magugu House and reminding would-be collectors that you don’t need to start with something wildly expensive.

It also means staying curious, making time to visit exhibitions, reading interesting things and, occasionally, escaping to the ocean with a coffee and a pastry.

Aspasia Karras (@aspasia_karras) chats to Buchanan in our September issue. Link in bio for the full interview.
