💡 Sabine Marcelis – Light and Color 🎨

Light becomes a material. Color becomes space.

In the first museum exhibition dedicated to the Dutch-New Zealand designer, the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich presents key works from across her career since the founding of her studio in 2011. Through light, color and materiality, designer Sabine Marcelis (@sabine_marcelis) creates immersive environments that transform the way we perceive our surroundings. Luminous objects, atmospheric installations and immersive spaces invite visitors into Marcelis's unique world.

Another design appreciation post! I discovered this piece by @pepijndegreef. For the ZETSE stool, he used the shape of an old milk funnel and reworked it in recycled plastic.

There’s some great thinking behind it, transforming something familiar and functional into something completely new, without losing what made the original form work in the first place.

It’s a good example of what draws me to playful design: clever concept aside, it’s just a fun piece to look at.

A PhD Update!! After six years of research and design work the moment is almost here, I will be defending my thesis 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐚𝐳𝐞 - 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 in two weeks from now.

My thesis develops Reflective AI: a practice that slows the technology down and uses it as a site for reflection rather than a tool for production. It treats the often-overlooked stages of AI practice, from collecting data to training a model, as a material to be worked, the way a ceramicist works clay.

Okay, this will get a bit personal…

A year ago, my grandmother (“oma”) died. 90 years old, almost 42 of them were mine to cherish. It feels like a privilege to have had all those years with her. And yet, it hurts so much to have to let go of someone who shaped the background of your entire life.

Dementia had already taken pieces of her away, gradually. In my head I had said a thousand goodbyes. But death is final in a way nothing else is, and I was not prepared for the emotional impact at all.

Art has always been a way to process.
In oma’s memory, I bought this beautiful light box by @wardgoes (swipe to see it with the light on).

My oma’s love spoke in many languages. She had an amazing sense of humor, the food she made for us was simply beyond compare (I feel like I can still taste/remember each and every dish she ever made) and she gave care in a way that asked nothing in return. She had an incredible resilience that met every hardship life put in her path (and there were many!), and somehow still made room for a joke and for joy. Love can indeed take literally any form.

“Literally anything”, that’s also what saying goodbye to someone means. After, anything is possible, everything is different. Not a blank slate, as the traces of her remain, but a new me, doing my best to navigate through life without (but still in a way with) her. 🩵

As a shared time-space, the soundscape of the city is an essential component of our environment. It has a major impact on the health of living beings, both psychologically and physiologically.

Paris and its densely populated urban area are particularly subject to noise pollution of all kinds, and silence is rare in this part of the city. Since reducing these nuisances depends on moving away from their sources or absorbing them into the built environment, it is difficult to find quiet public spaces.

The map of ‘Espaces Calmes’, drawn up in collaboration with Pierre Jamard, geomatician at Bruitparif, identifies 22 places where access to the public is free, and where the level of noise pollution is below 40 dB(A) annual average. In each of these places, located within a 20 km radius of Paris and far from the noise pollution emitted by road, rail and air transport, noise pollution is reduced to a mere background noise. Our ears then open up to other acoustic experiences.

This acoustic and urban study reveals the invisible and fragile landscapes of the Paris metropolis. It is part of a transformation of the metropolis towards a space focused on the well-being of its inhabitants and invites us to explore, preserve and integrate quiet spaces into future urban planning or architectural projects.

Two years ago, I celebrated my 30th birthday and received this beautiful painting from @kaspardejong , an incredible gift from my family and friends.

That same year, @laura.hoek and I bought our first apartment together, and we’ve been renovating ever since. Now, after almost two years, we’ve finally hung this piece on our wall, and I couldn’t be more grateful! Seeing it every day reminds me of how blessed I am to have such amazing people around me.

Thank you all so much for the beautiful gifts!

I’ve been waiting to share these photos for a while now. A study in contrast and harmony—Mae Engelgeer’s Various bench for @item.amsterdam explores simplicity and bold material expression. The tubular base creates a sense of transparency, while textile and leather surfaces add depth, texture, and refined color play. POST SCHOOL 👾🤖😈👻👽🤖🧞🧞‍♂️🧝‍♀️🧝🏻‍♂️🦑🦎🦒🦍🐉🐲🦨🦩🦜🪽🪼

During @cinekidfestival 2024, we presented our POST SCHOOL installation for the very first time. At the festival, an incredible 924 creatures were created by brilliant young minds. In total, we now have 1703 creatures showcased on our website and counting. We are thrilled by the enthusiasm and dedication these youngsters have poured into their work.

This year has been truly special for POST SCHOOL, and we are far from finished. Here is an overview of our upcoming events and workshops before the end of the year:
