There was a packed house this morning for Bijesh Maharjan’s special seminar, “Soil Health and Nutrient Management — Bridging Research to Education and Extension.”

Maharjan and Ray Ward were both honored for their contributions to Nebraska agriculture, with Maharjan receiving the inaugural Ray and Jolene Ward Professor of Soil Health Science. The professorship honors Ray and the late Jolene Ward for their longstanding contributions to Nebraska agriculture and recognizes Maharjan’s work translating research into practice through outreach, engagement and Extension activities.

Every grower has a different toolbox, different goals, and different challenges. The goal is not to judge or ostracize anyone. It is to learn, improve, and grow, pun intended, together. That is why education remains such an important part of Vitalize Seed.

As this graphic shows, soil biology exists on a continuum. As disturbance decreases and carbon inputs increase, soils generally move from being more bacteria dominated toward greater fungal influence.

For annual crops and food plots, the goal is not maximum fungal dominance. The goal is finding the biological sweet spot where nutrient cycling, soil structure, water infiltration, carbon storage, and plant productivity work together.

A simple way to think about it is that bacteria are FAST consumers. They process simpler carbon sources and can release nutrients quickly. Fungi are slower cycling consumers. They break down more complex carbon, support soil aggregation, retain nutrients, and contribute to longer term carbon storage.

Healthy soils need both. A diverse community of bacteria and fungi can also compete with harmful organisms, helping plants better withstand pathogenic stressors.

Every management decision influences where your soil falls on this continuum. Tillage, herbicides, grazing pressure, living roots, crop diversity, fertilizers, and organic amendments all play a role.

We can reduce carbon losses by limiting unnecessary disturbance. We can also add and retain carbon through living roots, root exudates, plant residue, diverse plantings, and carbon rich inputs like No-Till Nurture.

Balance is key. As a good friend of mine says, “The poison is in the dose.”

Tillage, herbicides, and grazing can all be useful tools. Problems arise when timing, frequency, or intensity becomes excessive. Heavy grazing can remove enough leaf area to slow or stop photosynthesis, reducing the carbon flowing into the soil.

The goal is not to eliminate tools. It is to use the right tool, at the right time, and at the right intensity.

We’re excited to host a three-part Soil Health Assessment Series this June and July, designed to take producers from understanding the science all the way to building a long-term plan for their land. All events are FREE, and will be held in the TCEDC HACT Room at 1021 Salazar Road in Taos.

Please RSVP at the 🔗 in our bio.

🟤Soil Health Assessment Workshop
June 18 | 2:00–4:00 PM
Terry Buettner from Ward Laboratories, Inc leads an in-depth look at modern soil health assessment—what the tests measure, how to interpret your results, and how documented soil health data can connect you to NRCS programs and conservation funding opportunities.

🟤Field Sampling Orientation & Producer Sign-Up
June 18 | 4:00–5:00 PM
Stay after the workshop to sign up for soil health testing through the Center of Southwest Culture. You’ll learn proper sampling techniques, how to identify sampling zones on your property, and how soil structure and biology directly influence water retention and irrigation efficiency on your operation.

🟤Results Review & Land Management Planning
July 23 | 2:00–4:00 PM
The Center of Southwest Culture will guide you through interpreting your individual soil health data and developing a long-term ecological monitoring plan—turning your numbers into an actionable roadmap for ongoing land health and resilience.

You know how the Parable of the Sower goes, right?

The seed only produces fruit when it falls on rich soil.

So, this was our roadmap to healthy soil before planting seedlings:

🔬First things first: got a soil test. We sent our sample to @wardlabs , but have heard it’s best to send to local labs since they’re more familiar with the soil.
🚜 Loosened the compacted ground with a tractor and broad fork.
✏️Outlined beds using sticks and twine (no plastic).
🌾Dusted beds with natural amendments like alfalfa meal and kelp meal found at local nurseries like @rehmsnursery and @plantworldinc .
🚚 Raked in compost from @soilutions_505 .
💪Tilled to disturb the weed network & fluff up the beds.

No synthetic fertilizers.
Minimal plastic.
OMRI-certified products.
All good stuff 💕

Vitalize EDU: What Potassium Is (and Isn’t) Doing in Your Soil

Potassium (K) is often abundant in soil, but not always available. Sounds similar to P doesn’t it? Let’s dive in!

Research, including work by Dr. Rick Mulvaney (University of Illinois), shows soils can hold far more K than standard tests indicate. The issue is availability, not just supply.

K can be:
• Tied up in minerals
• Held on the soil colloid
• Temporarily unavailable

pH plays a role.
In acidic soils, K availability can be reduced through interactions with iron and aluminum.

Cover crops help:
•Cycle K into plant-available forms
•Improve soil structure and porosity
•Access nutrients from areas roots couldn’t previously reach

In the plant, K supports:
•Water regulation
•Drought tolerance
•Nutrient and sugar movement
•Overall plant strength

K also plays a role in soil balance on the colloid alongside Ca and Mg.

I like placing K near or at planting to improve early uptake.

But balance matters.

Too much K can:
• Compete with Ca and Mg
• In extreme cases, interfere with other nutrients

Bottom line:
Potassium is critical, but availability and balance matter more than total levels.

It’s that time of year. Take your soil tests.

Whether you’re planting row crops, food plots, gardens, or pasture, good fertility programs start with good data.

At Vitalize Seed we recommend the Ward Labs S4 test for a complete fertility picture, or the Soil Health Assessment if you want biological indicators as well.

Order the Ward Laboratories test here:
https://vitalizeseed.com/products/ward-laboratories-test

A few keys for consistent testing:

• Sample at the same depth each year
• Record GPS coordinates so you test the same spots
• Sample at similar timing each year
• Use a reputable lab

Consistent soil testing removes the guesswork and helps you make better fertility decisions year after year.

Don’t guess. Test.

Day 2 at the @commclassic brought energy and optimism as Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins addressed the crowd, outlining key priorities for the year ahead. She said the U.S. Department of Agriculture will continue focusing on deregulation, expanding trade opportunities, strengthening domestic markets, lowering input costs and reinforcing the farm safety net to support America’s growers.

The evening concluded with a concert hosted by @nutrienagsolutions, featuring performances by Neal McCoy and Phil Vassar.
