This week’s #FridayFaces grew up in northeastern Nebraska before making her home in central Nebraska. 🌱

Meet Aleisha Ziegenbein - Sample Receiving Technician at Ward Laboratories, with 7 years on the team!

Aleisha is often one of the first people customers talk to when they bring in a sample. She receives samples, helps guide customers to the right testing based on their goals, and gets everything logged so the process can move quickly.

But it’s more than just checking boxes - it's understanding what a customer is looking for but may not know. One of the most interesting problems Aleisha helped to solve was when a customer came in worried about nitrates in feed grown under a pivot. After hearing that the crop had shown signs of stress, she encouraged them to also test for prussic acid, and when results came back high, they were grateful she had asked the right questions.

When she’s not at the lab, you’ll find her on a walk or spending time with her two horses. 🐴

Not necessarily! Dr. Ray Ward breaks down what happens to nitrogen after a hail-damaged corn crop - and why your cover crop could pose a surprising nitrate risk for grazing.

In one example, cover crop plants tested at 4,000 ppm nitrate. That's well above toxic levels. 😬

This week’s #FridayFaces is someone who left a mark on Ward Laboratories that will never fade. 🌱

With heavy hearts, we share that our colleague, mentor, and friend Terry Buettner passed away earlier this week.

Terry spent 34 years farming and ranching before joining the Ward team and for 9 years, he brought that lifetime of knowledge to every grower he served. He consulted, guided, problem-solved, and showed up every single day.

His favorite quote? One he may have coined himself: “You build a road with dirt. You create life in soil.”

His best career advice: “Don’t worry about things out of your control.” Words we could all use right now.

Off the clock, Terry loved golf, watching documentaries and sports, reading non-fiction, and unwinding in his pool. His radio station could always be found set to hardcore rock or heavy metal. 🤘

His coworkers’ one word for him? Old. (His words, not ours!) And said with the kind of humor that made Terry, Terry.

We will miss him deeply. Please keep his family in your thoughts.

There was a packed house this morning for Bijesh Maharjan’s special seminar, “Soil Health and Nutrient Management — Bridging Research to Education and Extension.”

Maharjan and Ray Ward were both honored for their contributions to Nebraska agriculture, with Maharjan receiving the inaugural Ray and Jolene Ward Professor of Soil Health Science. The professorship honors Ray and the late Jolene Ward for their longstanding contributions to Nebraska agriculture and recognizes Maharjan’s work translating research into practice through outreach, engagement and Extension activities.

Meet Sunny Nelson - Login Technician at Ward Laboratories and a nearly 7-year member of the team!

Sunny grew up in Redington and Bridgeport, Nebraska, bottle feeding baby calves and getting a very real education in where food comes from. 🐔 At Ward, she’s one of the first faces our customers see - greeting customers, unloading trucks, and making sure every sample is logged and ready for testing.

Her best career advice? “Use your benefits!”

Off the clock, you’ll find her hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, or planning her next adventure. She also has an African Fat Tailed Gecko named Lil Mama. 🦎

Sunny says that her coworkers’ one word to describe her would be: Blunt. (We don't disagree - and we still appreciate her for it!😆)
