Social media can be frustrating and disillusioning at times. But once in a while you “meet”someone you really connect with. Clint Warkentin is just one of those fun, generous and humorous people that you instantly like. This painting is from a reference he gave me. A huge thank you to him for sharing his work, and his friendship.#foxmom#wildlifeart#wildlifepainting#acrylicpainting#friendship

I’ve never been to Katmai. It’s lucky for me that I have wonderful friends who share their photos and experiences of this magical place. A place where bears roam amongst humans unconcerned and just living their best bear lives. The references for this painting are from Jen Fogle who is one of the very best bear photographers out there.

OK, I have to tell you about this book because I literally cannot stop thinking about it.

Living With Tigers by Valmik Thapar. 🐅

Here’s what you need to know.

In 1976, a 23-year-old city boy with no real plan stepped off a train near Ranthambore National Park in India and came face to face with his first wild tiger. And that moment changed everything.

He spent the next fifty years in those forests. Learning nearly 200 individual tigers by name. By personality. By the way they moved through the jungle. He watched them hunt, raise cubs, fight for territory, survive impossible odds, and grow old. He wrote thirty books about them. He fought for their protection. He devoted his life to understanding them.

And this book is the beautiful culmination of all of it.

You’ll meet Padmini, the first tiger he truly knew. You’ll meet Machli, one of the most famous wild tigers in history, who killed a crocodile and became a legend in Ranthambore.

Thapar wrote:

“As you track the tiger, the language of the jungle envelopes you. You become alert to the tension in every rustling leaf.”

I read that and immediately thought, yes.

I’ve sat in those forests. I’ve listened to alarm calls echo through the trees. I’ve felt that electric moment when the entire jungle seems to be holding its breath.

This book brought all of that rushing back.

Today marks one year since Valmik Thapar passed away, which makes this month’s read feel especially meaningful.

Come read it with me in The Wildlife Collective Book Club. 🐅📚

Drop a 🐅 if you’re reading along.

And tell me…have you ever had a moment in the wild that stayed with you forever? Please share with me in the comments.
