Introducing: The Warren

A long-standing Coaltown partner, @warrenmanselst is back for a new chapter, with a renewed focus on good food, community and bringing people together.

From Thursday volunteering days to the new Warren Food Collective, there’s plenty happening at 11 Mansel Street. The restaurant is also open all weekend! We popped down to catch up with the team, with Alysha giving their team a coffee refresh and hearing more about what’s next.

🍽️ On the Menu This Week

Our kitchen team is celebrating this harvest by making squash the absolute star of the show. Pull up a chair this week to try our Roasted Allotment Crown Prince Squash & Coconut Dhal on Tuesday and Butternut Squash Stew on Wednesday served up hot with a side of community warmth. And check out our pudding…Cegins famous Apple Cake!

Because we run on a pay-what-you-can basis, everyone in our community gets to celebrate this harvest together. Whether you are paying it forward to support our project or need a nourishing meal on us, there is a bowl of our home-grown squash waiting for you

Hope to see you this Tuesday and Wednesday.
And don't forget it's Allotment Volunteering day tomorrow 🌿

Ever wondered where the fresh ingredients in your bowls at Cegin Hedyn come from? 🌱

When you eat with us on Lammas Street, you’re stepping into a beautiful, local food loop right here in Carmarthenshire. ✨

Here is how the magic happens:

🧑‍🌾 The Growers: Hard-working local legends like our own allotment volanteers, Bremenda Farm, Gwynfe Growers, Tir Awel, Peniel Sunrise Market Garden, and Glasbren grow incredible, nutrient-dense food while healing the soil.

🍲 The Kitchen: We buy directly from them to keep money in the local economy, and we rescue farm gluts (like this week’s surplus runner beans!) and turn them into vibrant, plant-based meals.

🤝 The Table: Because we use a pay-what-you-can model, we shatter the financial barrier to organic, high-quality food. Every single person who sits down with us eats the exact same meal grown in local soil—regardless of what’s in their wallet.

Food justice starts from the ground up, and you make it happen every time you pull up a chair. 💚

✨ How to support the loop this week:
1️⃣ Come down and enjoy a seasonal bowl with us.
2️⃣ Pay it forward if you can to help us keep buying from local farmers at a fair price.
3️⃣ Drop us a message to volunteer in the kitchen or at our Community Allotment!

See you at the table! 👋

Yesterday I sat around a table in Carmarthen with some incredible people talking about food, poverty, farming, education and community.

And I came away feeling pretty emotional about it.

I told the story of the moment that eventually led to Cegin Hedyn. After Covid, I bumped into a friend who apologised for not coming to The Warren anymore.

“I just can’t afford it anymore.”

That really hit me.

Because I never opened The Warren believing that good, local, organic food should only be available to people who can afford it.

So I started asking: how do we do this differently?

That question eventually became Cegin Hedyn.

The original idea was that I’d turn up and cook a curry. If nobody helped, I knew I could probably feed 50 people myself.

But there was never a day when nobody helped.

One person came. Then another. And eventually a tiny idea became this huge community of people cooking, growing, volunteering, eating and looking after each other.

Yesterday, Jen from Cegin y Bobl talked about getting children properly cooking and understanding where their food comes from.

Mary Sherwood talked powerfully about poverty, dignity and why telling someone to simply “eat better” ignores the reality of living on a low income.

And Owen from LocalMotion pointed out something I haven’t stopped thinking about:

Right there in the word agriculture is culture.

Food IS culture.

It’s our farms, children, high streets, community centres, allotments, what we grow, what we cook and who we sit beside to eat it.

And Carmarthen has SO MUCH of this already happening.

Which brings me back to reopening The Warren.

I don’t just want to reopen a restaurant.

Yes, I want bloody delicious food, brilliant local produce, great wine and the place buzzing again.

But I also want us to keep asking:

What can a restaurant give back to the place it belongs to?

I don’t know the full answer yet.

But Cegin Hedyn taught me that you don’t always need to know what the finished thing looks like.

Sometimes you just need to plant the seed and trust your community to help you grow it. 🌱

I bloody love this town.

And I’m incredibly excited about what we could build here together.

Had a brilliant conversation with Lisa Fern at the Fallow event about food, resilience, community, and what it actually takes to keep values-led food businesses going.

Between us, there are a lot of years of cooking, teaching, growing, adapting, making mistakes, starting again and trying to work out how food can stay both good and accessible.

We talked about the reality behind hospitality, rising costs, fragile food systems, supporting local growers, teaching children to cook, perennial vegetables, community kitchens and the role that trust plays in projects like Cegin Hedyn.

One thing kept coming back:

Food resilience is not just about growing more food.

It is about skills.
It is about relationships.
It is about local producers.
It is about communities knowing and supporting one another.
And sometimes it is about trying something before you know whether it is going to work.

That is very much where I am with The Warren right now too.

This next chapter is an experiment in whether a place built around local, seasonal food can become something held more widely by the community around it.

A lot to figure out. But plenty worth fighting for.

Thanks Lisa for sharing the stage, the stories and the waffle.

A big week for food, growing & community in Carmarthenshire 🌱

We had a brilliant day on the Cegin Hedyn allotment yesterday. Lots done, lots growing, and plenty making its way from the soil towards the kitchen. Have a swipe through the photos 👉

Meanwhile, Sam and the team have another beautiful menu coming up this Tuesday & Wednesday, packed with local produce.

And this weekend, @fallow.wales arrives in the Tywi Valley 🌾

A new gathering bringing together farmers, growers, producers, makers, cooks and communities for markets, workshops, conversations about food & farming, and plenty of good things to eat.

A lot of the event is pay what you can afford, too.

Deri will be there talking about the work he is doing at Cegin Hedyn & The Warren and why community food projects matter with Lisa Fern from Y Sied.

Hopefully we’ll see a few familiar faces there.

🤍 ARTHUR’S × SANDS | 100K FOR SANDS 🤍

On Friday 18th September, we’re bringing Carmarthen together for a 5K community walk, with a collective goal of 100K for Sands.

🚶‍♀️ 5K each
🎯 £50 fundraising target
🤍 20 walkers = 100K
☕️ Coffee on Arthur’s when you finish

Sands is the Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Society, supporting anyone affected by the death of a baby — including mums, dads, partners and families. They provide bereavement support, information, resources and a community for families navigating the unimaginable loss of a baby.

This is for every baby carried in our hearts. 🤍

The babies who were here for a moment.
The babies who should be here today.
The babies whose names are still spoken.

Everyone who walks and raises £50 gets a FREE raffle entry, with our prize pot already worth well over £300 — or raffle entries are £20 each.

We’re also still looking for local businesses who would like to donate a prize. 🤍

Can Carmarthen walk 100K for Sands?
We think we can. 🫶🏼

Sign-up details coming very soon.
