Building stronger university-community relationships starts with understanding what’s working and where there’s room to grow.

To help assess the depth and effectiveness of our impact, @washu is pursuing the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. This multi-year process will examine the university’s current partnerships and help shape future approaches to community-engaged teaching, research and service across St. Louis.

To launch this effort, we're co-hosting Community Engagement Week with the Confluence Collaborative for Community Engagement, @washugephardt, and @stlouisihn. We hope you'll join the conversation!

Did you know the Danforth Campus is home to 7,300 trees, including numerous Missouri native plants and even some threatened and endangered species?

Over the last decade, WashU has worked to integrate conservation, research and teaching into the campus landscape, creating a living classroom for students and the St. Louis community.

This fall, the @WashU Arboretum is creating more opportunities to engage with ecosystems and learn about the biodiversity all around us. From foraging to mindfulness, free public programs invite the community to experience the campus landscape in new ways.

👋 Come along with WashU sophomore Joshitha Bodavula for a day in the life as a student in the @washuenvironment Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

Joshitha, who is majoring in biochemistry and minoring in environmental studies, was among 15 students who participated in the intensive 10-week research program.

Her work in the Catalano Lab focused on assessing urban soil lead risk in the City of St. Louis, particularly in areas affected by the May 2025 tornado.

“The CFE summer program gave me the opportunity to experience research in One Health, with chemical analysis that had real-world implications, something I hope to continue in my future research,” she said. “Not only did I find a community amongst my lab group and mentors, I found friendships in my program who also held similar goals in research as I did, and learning alongside everyone while enjoying summer in STL was an amazing experience.”

Community members, researchers and growers came together at the @seedstlouis St. Louis Community Agriculture Conference—an annual gathering focused on connection, shared knowledge and the future of urban agriculture.

This year, an interdisciplinary research team from @washupublichealth, @washuenvironment, @washuengineers and @washuartsci attended to engage directly with local gardeners about challenges and opportunities shaping community growing spaces in our region. Their presentation highlighted the risks of planting in contaminated soils and the role of community gardens in addressing chronic dietary micronutrient deficiencies. It concluded with feedback, discussion, and research ideation from attendees.

“When done right, community-engaged research leads to greater impact,” said Mark Doyle, senior network manager of FARM. “Such research starts and ends with the community — from the formation of research questions, to the communication of results. Sessions like this provide an opportunity to listen and understand community needs as we plan future research.”

Access to food isn’t just about supply—it’s also about location, infrastructure, timing and equity.

New research from @washu's St. Louis Policy Initiative maps “food pantry deserts” across the city and county, highlighting areas where residents face limited access to food assistance. Inspired in part by SNAP funding cut concerns tied to last year's government shutdown, the team aims to help our community adapt as the landscape of public assistance continues to evolve.

The St. Louis Dashboard is a new online tool developed with support from @weidenbaumcenter scholars, @washuartsci, the Office of the Provost, and @rccfoodpantry. By combining data analysis with community insight, the project is helping identify gaps that can inform regional planning to get ahead of the next political or environmental disruption.
