PAY ATTENTION AND READ THIS FOR A SECOND ‼️

today, my classmates and i were shocked, appalled and saddened to hear about our colleges decision to cut the funding for our advanced diploma program. being in the arts, it should be expected, right? but this is bigger than that.

this program has been a part of fanshawe college for more than 50 years, and it was one of the first courses to be introduced when the college first opened. so much history, so many opportunities, so many jobs are being lost today and in the future.

“but you still get to graduate!” that’s not the point. with this program being reduced to only being the one year certificate program, the program as a whole is going to lose steam, and lose traction, and fine arts as a whole will be fizzled out.

“but the arts isn’t as important as _____!” yes it is. it may not seem like much, but art is SO INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. art saves lives like doctors do, art allows people to express themselves in many form rather than just painting and drawing. yeah its visual arts getting cut today but what’s next? photography? creative writing? dance?

a society without art is a society without expression, beauty, and community. the world would look a lot dimmer if there wasn’t artists out there being beautifully creative. this program gave so many students a way to study art, and explore different mediums at an AFFORDABLE COST.

fine arts should not belong to universities. art is and ALWAYS WILL BE HERE. the arts need to be accessible, they need to be affordable, and the news we all received today felt like a punch to the gut not just to those of us who are in the program, but the prospective students, as well as the great art community of london who have been massively supportive.

i compiled some pictures of my class, who are all lovely people, and the show we worked so hard for this year, as well as some words from them and a piece by the lovely julie thats more relevant than ever now.

thank you to all of my professors, who have become great mentors and friends of mine, please keep being amazing when this is all said and done.

please keep fighting, please keep creating.
