A couple of weeks have passed since I last posted on here! This month has been difficult. My Dad fell at home while I was away on a trip, and he’s been in the hospital due to trauma from a brain bleed. Thankfully, his recovery has been starting to look promising, but he’s got a long road of rehab ahead no matter what.

Many of you know Dad went with me to over three-quarters of the waterfalls in my book, including many tough bushwhacks and long days out in adverse weather. It’s jarring to see him like this now after the many years of outdoor adventure, but those are memories I will always cherish deeply.

I had planned a move to Alabama this August to start law school and begin my next endeavor cataloguing Alabama waterfalls. Sadly, this move looks increasingly unrealistic at this time, as Dad is in great need of my help and care over the next several months. I’ve been feeling it’s my duty to stay here in Georgia for some time to prioritize family. But fear not, I will continue documenting lots of new waterfalls no matter what happens!

On Saturday 7-18, I took the afternoon off for a “nature reset” with my friends and veteran waterfallers @waterfallswithlogan, @kozdok, and @vivinit to visit one of my favorite Georgia waterfalls. It’s called Fall Creek Falls, not to be confused with its better-known doppelgänger up in Tennessee.

I find this to be among our state’s most picturesque waterfalls of its size, towering 80 feet high, amazingly found just one hour from the Atlanta area. This beauty even graces the front cover of my “Waterfalls of Georgia” guidebook (p. 81). Enjoy three different angles of Fall Creek Falls on this lush summer evening.

I got to tag along with some Georgia friends this weekend to visit Fall Creek Falls in Dawson Forest WMA north of Atlanta. This beautiful waterfall graces the cover of Georgia’s definitive waterfall book. From the Tobacco Pouch Trailhead it was a 5.17 mile out and back hike with 1277 feet of elevation gain, most of it on the way out. A GA Lands Pass or hunting or fishing license is required to visit this WMA.

If you hike in Georgia, you should definitely check out Mark Ozboyd’s “Waterfalls of Georgia” book. It is comprehensive in scope with detailed hiking directions and beautiful photos. I’ve used it to visit several seldom seen Georgia waterfalls. Ordering info is in the bio of @dr_waterfall

Happy hiking!

I left work one beautiful afternoon last week and headed straight north for an hour to visit one of my favorite Georgia waterfalls, Fall Creek Falls in the Dawson Forest.

@waterfallswithlogan and I started hiking at 6 p.m., got to the falls around 8 p.m., and had it all to ourselves for an hour until darkness fell upon the landscape. The night hike back to the trailhead featured lots of critters, including a massive bullfrog, a sneaky copperhead, and a crawdad locked into an active fishing pursuit.

Fall Creek Falls is so picturesque that I decided to grace the front cover of my “Waterfalls of Georgia” book with its beauty. I really love the broad, stairstepping cascade of this 80-foot waterfall. It sits in a lush green forested setting, which is particularly extraordinary this time of year.

Unlike many of my other favorite waterfalls, Fall Creek Falls sits along an official marked trail. It can be reached via a 3.8-mile hike from the Wildcat Campground, which curiously now features a profusion of ‘no camping’ signs. The trail passes many scenic views of Wildcat Creek and Fall Creek, in addition to swimming holes and two other significant waterfalls.

Detailed hiking directions can be found at page 81 of my waterfall book (link in bio).

Logan and I hit the beach! North Georgia’s finest mountain beach, that is.

At a magical spot called Wells Shoals Falls, the Middle Fork Broad River drops over a spectacular 35-foot waterfall. A semicircular rock amphitheater surrounds the waterfall’s deep crescent-shaped pool, while a sandy beach about the size of a football field runs downstream.

Unfortunately, Wells Shoals Falls lies within a narrow sliver of private property that extends up the river, despite being surrounded by National Forest land on three sides. The public land boundary is only a few hundred feet away. The waterfall is named after the Wells family, who has owned land here for generations.

Locals have been allowed to visit Wells Shoals forever, often fishing, camping, and partying on the beach. Yet that certainly doesn’t mean access is guaranteed. In my opinion, this waterfall should be a top conservation priority for the state of Georgia. It is one of the most unique spots I’ve seen and would make a fantastic addition to the adjacent Lake Russell WMA. I’d also love to see a gate to block the illegal four-wheeler traffic and make this a nice longer hike.

I long for the day when I could highlight this waterfall in my guidebook for others to enjoy.
