HORSE BRANCH FALLS
This one is a short half mile bushwhack and creek walk. It can be a bit slow going with all of the deadfall and rhododendron across Horse Branch. I didn’t find it particularly difficult but annoying as my shirt was getting snagged on every single tree limb it could find 😝

Went to Fourth Falls on Fall Creek in Dawsonville today. It’s close enough to home that it’s in the regular rotation and I can get it done in less than 1/2 a day. This out and back hike is quite scenic at ~5 miles. Also, walked right over a copperhead and didn’t miss a beat!

I am always looking for easy access waterfalls for when I’m out and about but can’t get a full hike in. Upper Talona Falls in Ellijay fits the bill at less than .5 miles round trip. Makes for a quick in and out.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to check out Miner Shoals on the Soque River and a few of the surrounding buildings at the Old Habersham Mill Complex in Demorest, Ga.

Turns out it was a really cool old mill village that had stores, post offices, school, barber shops and more. It dates back to the 1830’s and had its peak in the 1940’s-1960’s.

I’d love to go back and learn more about this spot.

The new owners bought it in 2012 and have done an excellent job of preserving what they can of the old architecture while repurposing the spaces into Airbnb’s, event halls, living quarters and more.

The complex is posted and you must obtain permission before visiting.

Last Saturday I went to Chatsworth and hiked the Emery Creek Trail to see its run of waterfalls.

I had the entire trail to myself until on my way back and almost to the parking. Excellent day in the woods.

Yesterday’s hike was to four waterfalls on Canada Creek aka Canada Creek Falls, Yukon Falls, Alberta Falls and Ontario Falls. We all prepared for a wet and rainy day but to our surprise we got a bit of sunshine instead. My pictures are not in order but I’ll note the names in the photos.

My favorites in order are:
1. Canada Creek Falls
2. Yukon Falls
3. Ontario Falls
4. Alberta Falls

Here’s a nice spot, especially for Metro Atlanta. Palm Creek Falls is about 15’ high and would probably look even better in the cooler months with more water. The big rock slabs and adjacent creek beds make for a unique outing you wouldn’t expect in the area. I clocked about 1.5 miles but you can get away with ~1 mile just out and back to the falls.

Took a short trip to Jones Creek Falls.

Yesterday I was looking through my waypoints and notes, trying to find an after work hike and came across a waterfall I forgot about. I had seen a few old pictures and the waterfall appeared to be heavily cluttered. After seeing a few newer pictures online, I decided to go for it. I wasn’t disappointed.

This hike is on a really easy trail from the Jake Mountain day use parking and then a moderate scramble down to the creek. Once at the creek, getting views of the waterfall will have you scrambling on slick rocks and getting at least your feet wet. Next time I’ll have to cross the creek for better pictures. Hiked ~4 miles.

On Friday a few of us got together and hiked down the Big Lost Creek CNF 109 Trail to Big Lost Creek Falls.

It’s an easy trail with a few creek crossings and a mild creek walk up to the base. From the base of the waterfall, you can choose to hang out or continue the climb up to see the different drops of this 160’ monster. Although the flow wasn’t too high, Big Lost Creek Falls has great character. I’ll be back to see this one in different seasons and flow.
