We should not have these days: Lion day, environment day, water day, Indigenous day of the year and so on. The fact that we have these days shows that there is something intrinsicly wrong with #ourplanet.
Indigenous communities depend on intact ecosystems to live out their #culturalheritage. This is why they are natural conservationists. Yet in the #world that we have created, we disregard and disrespect not only them and their #identity but everything they do to #protect our #planet. Why do we need a new pipeline running through #native American holy #land? Why do we need another dam in the #selousgamereserve of #tanzania at the cost of millions of trees? Why are the #southernresidentkillerwhales facing extinction in exchange for more salmon for an ever increasing #human population? Why are the Suri and Mursi people of #ethiopia losing their land to 'development' projects when they have successfully guarded a fragile river #ecosystem that supports a large part of Ethiopia's #biodiversity. Wherever we hurt #nature, we hurt our planet's last remaining indigenous #tribes. Wherever we take land of #indigenous communities, we hurt our planet.
We need to take a step back from flatscreen TVs, expensive cars and all the other crap we feel the need to buy to fill this hole in our hearts. We need to say no to how society tells us to live our lives.
We need, in short, to rebel against a system that keeps us in chains while all around us, our planet, our home, falls to pieces.

Indigenous #culture is holy, in so many ways. But I don't mean in a religious way, I mean in the way that 'Enkai', the creator of the #world is holy to the #maasai. In the way that sky, grass and water are holy to our #planet. Because we cannot live without them.
Indigenous communities of #planetearth still know how to live in #harmony with their #environment. Their #soul is one with this world, with their fellow #human beings, with themselves.
Witnessing them live out their culture, dancing and chanting like they have done for centuries is an honour and something that touches me and moves me deep within my soul everytime I do so. To say that I #love them is not enough: I cherish them, I admire them, I adore them, I feel for them in so many ways that I am one with them. Now and forever.
