Last week Nick and I dropped our first unique episode of The Deep Wade Podcast. If you haven’t listened, go to the link in our bio and listen to the episode – where we introduce ourselves and take a deep dive into the traits that make each salmon, trout, and char unique, and discuss whether we can recover those species if we don’t recover/rebuild those traits.

This week, we repost an episode from the former Barbless podcast where I interview my father, Bill McMillan. In this episode my dad discusses the hardcore history of salmon and steelhead – and why those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Go to the link in the profile to listen to the podcast.

Dad and I discuss the history of salmon in the Columbia River and take the listeners back in time to the mid-1800’s through the early 1900’s. How many salmon and steelhead were in the Columbia back then? Offhand, one might think that salmon and steelhead were still uber-abundant in the late-1800’s. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. For instance, do you know Shearer’s Falls on the Deschutes was named after Joe Shearer, and he was interviewed by fishery scientists in the late 1800’s. He sounded as concerned back then about steelhead and Chinook as we do now. Why was he concerned? Because industrial fishing had greatly depleted the fish, and it’s amazing how wasteful the canneries could be. Further, The Deschutes River enters the Columbia near the former Celilo Falls, a massive migratory challenge for salmon and steelhead. Do you wonder which species were able to ascend Celilo Falls? What about the size of the Chinook salmon that spawned in the upper Columbia near the Kettle River? Redds so abundant and massive that horses had to plow them to facilitate boat passage. Imagine that!

If you want some historical information here is a link to a series on Lewis and Clark by my father: https://theconservationangler.wordpress.com/2017/05/01/lewis-and-clarks-white-salmon-trout-coho-salmon-or-steelhead-part-one/.
