In this oped for the Newcastle Herald I reflect on my research into the relationship between technology, identity and justice and with a focus on in-depth interviews in 2023 with queer adults in Newcastle and the Hunter. 2023 was a challenging year for queer visibility and notably in threats against drag queen story time childhood literacy presenters and organisers, including in Newcastle. On the upside, interview participants sincerely value their online and in-person communities and invest in them to maintain connection and belonging. Participants also suggested that there could be further integration of technology into public spaces for increased safety and belonging, including awareness raising of queer history through QR codes in places of queer significance. I will be discussing these points and more from my research 5:30PM this Thursday 15 October at Watt Space. This event is part of Newcastle Pride, and is co-sponsored by The Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology, The University of Newcastle Criminology and Criminal Justice Society, The University of Newcastle EDI Unit, Watt Space Gallery, and The Press Book House, Newcastle. 5:30 Thursday 15 October, Watt Space in Newcastle - Digiqueer regional futures. At this event based on my research, I will discuss the opportunities and challenges of regional queer life in a digital society. I will then be in conversation with local performer Timberlina, who will share their experience of visibility amid some challenging times for diversity. Drawing on local research and lived experiences, this conversation will examine how digital technologies are reshaping belonging, safety, recognition, and resistance for LGBTQIA+ communities in Newcastle and the Hunter, but with implications for other regions and metro areas across Australia. This event is co-sponsored by The Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology, The University of Newcastle Criminology and Criminal Justice Society, The University of Newcastle EDI Unit, Watt Space Gallery, and The Press Book House, Newcastle. BTW - it is also a great opportunity to catch Night Flowers - the Damien Frost exhibition at Watts Space. Register in link in bio.

My portrait from Damien Frost’s incredible Night Flowers collection, which you can still go to see for free at @wattspace until 4th October as part of @newannual festival. It is such a breathtaking collection of portraits spanning over a decade. I’m definitely biased when I say that the most recent Novocastrian additions are some of my favourites. Huge thanks to @bellas_pole_studio @bellastella2202 for letting Damien come to the studio and photograph me in drag up in the Lyra. And extra special thanks to @sarahevelynbooker for setting everything up on the day 🤗🖤 📸: @nightflowersbook #NightFlowers #DragArtist #Lyra #AerialHoop #MakingArtIsFun

Three exhibitions you need to check out during @newannual Angela Tiatia’s exhibition Muse at @newcastleartgalleryaustralia This exhibition draws together twenty years of video, photography and installation.
