Fall 2026 Community Classes start tomorrow! Dive in with this week… Introducing Community Class teaching artist PHYLICIA ROYBAL (she/they) / @wav_l_ngth @phyliciaroybal @mauvetaupe.friends @new_dialect @backstagepresents Throughout our fall series Phylicia will be offering GYROKINESIS®️Method during our 9:30am warm up sessions 🌀 ABOUT THE CLASS: The Gyrokinesis®️ Method is a movement method that addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It is an original and unique method, which coordinates movement, breath and mental focus. Postures are not held for long periods of time. Instead, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making exercises appear and feel more like a dance than traditional yoga. The Gyrokinesis Method is practiced on a mat and chair, without equipment. GYROKINESIS® is a registered trademark of GYROTONIC® Sales Corp and is used with their permission. ABOUT PHYLICIA: Phylicia Roybal is a movement artist originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, now based in Nashville. She earned her BFA from the University of Arizona in 2011, receiving the Gertrude Shurr Memorial Award in Modern Dance. A freelance artist, Phylicia has performed and collaborated with artists, companies, and interdisciplinary festivals nationally and internationally. She is a certified Gyrokinesis® trainer and Gyrotonic® trainer, co-founder of MauveTaupe, and creator of BACKSTAGE, an outdoor performance platform centered on accessibility, experimentation, and community. Her work is rooted in somatic inquiry, improvisation, and embodied dialogue. 🔗Check out our complete schedule + rates + more details at the link in our bio 📸: @bklynn22 slides 1 & 3 📸: @tanjakuic slide 2 #NewDialect #CommunityDance #NashvilleDance #ContemporaryDance #gyrokinesis®

Phylicia Roybal is the Earth Goddess in The Fire Cycle: Stone Sutra, premiering on @allartstv April 21. Originally from Santa Fe, NM, Phylicia earned her BFA from the University of Arizona, where she also received the Gertrude Shurr Memorial Award in Modern Dance. Fire Cycle followers will recognize Phylicia from our 2023 @ozartsnashville performance and our 2026 theatrical production, for which she contributed an original choreographic work, built with her @mauvetaupe.friends collaborator @spencerjgrady (another clutch Fire Cycle artist). In addition to MauveTaupe, Phylicia is very active in the Nashville dance community, working with @_pydance_ , @dogseatwind , and many others. You’ve seen her at @kindlingartsfest @animata_arts , OZ Brave New Works, and more. Also, Phylicia is a certified Gyrokinesis teacher, and she teaches in multiple spots around town and online every week. Studying with Phylicia is like studying with an Earth Goddess. She’s simultaneously gentle and powerful, ethereal and deeply grounded. Learn more at @wav_l_ngth In May, she’ll be teaching as part of the @new_dialect Community class series, where MauveTaupe will also lead a duet-building class! She’s also a big supporter of new work. She and @bklynn22 host @backstagepresents, an outdoor new works lab in Madison, and a great place to catch new work in its early stages from new and established artists. See Phylicia in The Fire Cycle: Stone Sutra on @allarts beginning April 21!

Dear Nashville arts community - We are sad to announce we have made the difficult decision to pause Animata Arts for the 2025-2026 season. Our original plan was to roll out applications in early September, but our home at Centennial Performing Arts Studios got word just before the announcement that there were necessary building repairs that needed to be scheduled. We held off with hopes that once the repair plans were in place, we could adjust our own timeline and move forward. After several meetings and shifted plans of what could be accommodated in reality, we came to the conclusion that too much would be sacrificed in order to put together the program this year, and instead, to put our focus towards coming back stronger next year. Our friends at Metro Parks Dance Division have been working like magicians to make a studio transition happen over at Morgan Park Community Center, so dancers, if you are in need of studio space, please reach out and we can help connect you. In the meantime, we would love to share the projects you are working on and help spread the word for any upcoming performances or workshops or fundraising events that you have going on. We’ll be back in September 2026, so keep your eyes peeled for residency application announcements come next Fall! Thank you 🖤 Amanda, Sarah, Kathryn ••• And in the meantime, enjoy this highlight reel of our amazing 2024-2025 Artists in Residence: @saritabeehoke @a_lee_myles @g.a.r.a.g.e.c.o Filmed by @fortider Reel edited by @amandareichert
