This is my grandson,

Chas Vehiatua Kalaniohawai’iloa Auna-McNamara

If you have kids or grandkids, you know how precious that time together is. Every moment with this little boy reminds me how blessed I am—and what matters most.

Family. ʻOhana. Legacy. ALOHA.

I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished in surfing. Yeah, beating Kelly Slater twice in one day at Pipeline is a memory I’ll always smile about. But being a good person, caring for others, and showing up for your community means so much more to me.

When I leave this planet, I hope people remember that I did everything I could to support our community, give our keiki opportunities, and help the sport of surfing grow worldwide—starting here in Hawaiʻi, with my heart right here on the North Shore of Oʻahu.

That’s my mission. That’s the legacy I want to leave. And I hope my grandson feels that aloha through the way I live, the things I do, and the time we share.

Our time here is short, and tomorrow isn’t promised. Love your family. Spend time with your kids and grandkids. Help somebody. Leave your community a little better than you found it.

That’s my message today.

ALOHA,
Uncle Liam 🤙🏽

Aloha ʻohana,

First i want to ask everyone to help Kauai!! I feel for all the small businesses and all the people who lost so much!!

I’ve been a little quiet, but I have good news. Thanks to your support helping us get an attorney, we reached a settlement with the landowner that we’re happy with. We are here, and we are OPEN!

Mahalo to everyone who supported my family, especially those who prayed for us. You helped carry us through a very difficult time.

We still face possible eviction when the City takes over. We support our lifeguards and first responders. Our lives have always been connected to the ocean, and we believe there is room for both their facilities and our businesses.

Please contact Mayor Rick Blangiardi and Councilmember Matt Weyer. Ask them to help keep the McNamara businesses at Sharks Cove. After 25 years, this is more than our livelihood—it’s our home.

This experience has taught me we cannot look away from government decisions that affect our families. Register to vote, speak up, and hold our leaders accountable. Our community, beach access, Hawaiian traditions, and local livelihoods deserve protection.

THE REAL NORTH SHORE — 1985 🤙🏽🌺

This is me and one of my best friends growing up, Solomon Kane, at the ʻEhukai parking lot in 1985.

I was 15, Solomon was 16, and we were slangin’ foot-long hot dogs out of our little hot dog wagon! 🌭😂

This was way before food trucks were everywhere on Oʻahu, let alone the North Shore. Before all the restrictions and regulations we have today. We were just teenagers working, surfing, making a few bucks and living life on the North Shore.

Solomon comes from a deep-rooted Hawaiian ʻohana. Many old-school North Shore people will remember Maui Loa and the Kane family. They had property around Rocky Point, Pūpūkea and near Foodland and were our neighbors growing up. Rest in peace Maui Loa. 🙏🏽

Solomon and I went to Kahuku together. We surfed together, partied together, worked together and, yeah, got into a little trouble together. 😂

Our crew included Chris Angel, @eringrabarek Kolohe Bloomfield, @rainoshayes Tom Tom, Jason Majors, @clarklittle , David Pine, Bobby Nickerbocker, Alan Moepono, Chris @stymie_int Fielding Benson, jasper ,Eric Olson @aloha_labz and many more.

We weren’t perfect — far from it — but I wouldn’t change those years for anything.

Life was different. Fewer rules, fewer restrictions, more freedom, and an incredible group of people growing up together around surfing, family and community.

That was the REAL North Shore.
The OG North Shore.
The legendary North Shore of the ’80s. 🤙🏽

A time and place that can never truly be replicated.

Much mahalo to Solomon and the entire Kane ʻohana for letting me be part of your lives and for being such an important part of mine.

Love, aloha and blessings to everyone who shared those years with us. ❤️🌺

Rest in peace Jason Majors.
Rest in peace Chris Angel. 🙏🏽
Rest in peace Tom Tom

I moved to Hawaiʻi in 1978, starting at Waialua Elementary, then @waialuasurfteam and eventually being blessed to move up to Sunset Beach! Then I was attending @kahukusurfteam

This is one reason why im so passionate about both high school surf teams and will do everything I can to have the kids from those schools get the opportunity they need to live there dreams!!

Pipeline became a huge part of my life.

When I was young, people told me I’d never be able to surf Pipeline. I stood up too slow. I was a white boy trying to find my place on the North Shore, earn respect, stand up for myself, and eventually make a life and raise my family here.

Pipeline taught me lessons that went way beyond surfing.

A lot of my strength, passion, integrity and wisdom came from facing challenges in that water.

When you’re sitting at Pipeline and that wave comes, you have a choice. You can pull back, or you can put your head down and paddle.

You’re paddling into one of the deadliest waves in the world, not knowing whether you’re going to get crushed or come flying out of that barrel and achieve something you’ve dreamed about your whole life.

Life can be the same way.

Sometimes you just gotta put your head down and paddle.

If you really want something, fight for it. If you believe your voice needs to be heard, use it. And when something you love is worth protecting, stand up for it.

That’s what I’m doing today.

To every single person praying for us, supporting us, sharing our story and giving me strength and courage — mahalo. That support means more than you know.

I’ve faced some heavy waves at Pipeline, and right now I’m facing some heavy waves in life. I’m gonna keep paddling.

Much mahalo,
Liam McNamara 🤙🏽
