POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
🎙️ This week on the What Are You Doing in Denmark podcast, Derek was joined by two hilarious comedians and friends of the show. @jeffersonbondcomedy and @andersmorgenstierne returned to @waydidpod for a hilarious discussion on convenience culture and how it, or the lack of it, can impact your move to Denmark with @derekhartmandk

Along the way, some great conversations and laughs with rants about convenience, Uber, and some opinions and theories that we need to ensure you know were shared as SATIRE 🤪

As always happens on social media platforms, we are certain the humor will be fully understood, appreciated, and supported. Please leave happy comments below to prove this 👇

Don’t forget to listen to the full episode, available wherever you get your podcasts, on YouTube (Derek og Mike channel) and via @cphpost

🎟️ Grab tickets to see Jeff and Anders in Copenhagen’s Up Festival @upfestivaldk from 9-18 October AND see Derek, Conrad, and Neil Fitzpatrick with a live standup show on 26th November at @nostresskbh - you know where the links are

👋 Have we met? I’m Derek and I help people make Denmark make sense.

With only a few weeks of notice and next to zero planning, I moved to Copenhagen in 2017. Back then, this platform was only people sharing photos. Aside from a few blogs (remember those?), there wasn’t much social media help for people moving to Denmark.

A few years later, a friend from high school reached out. We hadn’t talked in years, but he was planning a move abroad and wanted to hear about my experience. Unfortunately, we couldn’t coordinate a time to chat before his family relocated.

A year into his expat assignment, I finally got ahold of him only to learn they were moving back home. The cultural shift was too much, and the adaptation wasn’t clicking.

While my advice might not have completely changed their trajectory, it could have helped them find a softer landing or better prepare for what was to come.

That is exactly why I started this account. My goal is to:

🇩🇰 Help you understand Danish culture and the unwritten rules of living here.
🇩🇰 Share the authentic highs and lows of living abroad (because it’s not all pastries and cargo bikes).
🇩🇰 Remind you that you’re not alone as you navigate the good and the bad of life in Denmark.

I do this through near-daily tips, stories, memes, jokes, and sketches. Plus, every Tuesday I drop new episodes of @waydidpod on all podcast platforms/YouTube, alongside a deep catalog of @youtube videos dating back to 2020.

My DMs are always open if you need advice, have questions, or just want to share your own experience. Building this supportive community has been the absolute best part of creating content.

If you’re not following yet, take a look around and tap that follow button if you like what you see. I’ll have more for you tomorrow! 😃

🎙️Some of the best advice we’ve ever shared on What Are You Doing in Denmark didn’t come from us, it came from some of our smartest (and funniest) Danish guests.

We pulled together a handful of our favorite moments into a brand new episode, and in this compilation, you’ll hear advice from Sofie Hagen, Cecilia Bau, Mathias Bach, and Steven Feraru on everything from making friends and learning Danish to navigating Danish bureaucracy.

Derek, Brooke, and Conrad reflect on what pieces of advice they have applied since the original recordings and what we still need to work on. Along the way you’ll get a lot of laughs with tips on finding your place in Denmark, and why standing out might actually be your biggest strength.

If you don’t yet have Danish friends to show you the way and share their wisdom, please borrow ours!

The best part? If one of these conversations leaves you wanting more, we’ve linked each guest’s original full episode in the show notes so you can dive even deeper. So check out this episode wherever you get your podcasts, on the Robe Trotting YouTube channel, and via @cphpost

Have you ever wondered whether something was a relationship issue... or just a cultural difference?

This week on What Are You Doing in Denmark, we answered a message from a listener who’s been wondering exactly that in her relationship with a Danish partner.

Along the way, Brooke lets us in on what it was like dating and marrying a Dane while living in her home country and now his. Derek shares the pros and cons of living in Denmark with a partner who is non-Danish and from the same native culture.

While it seems like relationship complexities defy borders, this episode does offer plenty of advice, relatable experiences, and food for thought and it turned into one of the most honest conversations we’ve had about what it feels like to rebuild your identity in another country and why that invisible work can be so exhausting.

Is the problem with one of them or simply the reality of bringing two cultures together? (Listen and let us know)

🇩🇰 What comes to mind when you think of hunting and guns in Denmark?

We didn’t know what to think, but we knew who to ask, David Carsten Pedersen. He is a an author, hunting educator, and the host of @jagtradio - and last week he was our guest on What Are You Doing in Denmark.

🦌 David gave us all the answers to our questions about hunting and gun ownership in Denmark with some great stories along the way. Go find the episode and he will unpack the tradition, the culture, and the realities of guns and hunting in a Danish context.

➡️ What if you move to Denmark for work and then lose your job?

No one wants to go into an international work assignment thinking that way, but it’s good to know your options if the unfortunate situation occurs.

That’s why we sat down for an explainer on the subject at the request of a listener. Not everyone moves to Denmark under the same conditions and status (EU vs non-EU, family reunification vs work visa) so you should always get professional advice from an attorney or the proper government agency. Still, this episode will cover the basics and give you the basics so that you can chart your course to a smooth landing if you’re left without a job in Denmark.
