POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Okay, this is pretty dang cool 🥹🎙️🇪🇺
WAYDID has been named one of EUROWAVES’ Top 25 Best European Podcasts and we’re a little blown away.
Getting recognized by people in the European podcasting world is such an honor, ESPECIALLY because there are so many brilliant podcasts out there doing really phenomenal things.

Truth is… that recognition is the cherry on top, because the thing that keeps us making WAYDID every single week is you, our community.

We started this podcast to help people make Denmark make sense and to help people build a life here when they might sometimes feel like they’re doing it alone.

If an episode has ever made you think “Wow, so it’s not just me,” helped you understand something about Denmark, or made you laugh about an experience you were otherwise ready to scream about… then that’s exactly why we’re here.
There’s something pretty special and almost necessary about hearing someone else put words to an experience you thought only you were having. We hope WAYDID gives you a little bit of that every week and that somewhere in all these conversations, you see a bit of yourself.

So thank YOU!

Thank you for listening, watching, sharing, sending us messages, coming to live shows, recommending us to your friends, and generally allowing three people with very different relationships to Denmark to keep talking about Denmark on the internet.

And thank you to EUROWAVES for including us in this list of superstar shows. We’re genuinely honored.

The recognition is amazing, but knowing WAYDID helps people feel a little less alone in Denmark is the biggest reward 🇩🇰❤️ taken in Denmark by @waydidpod

🎙️ This week on the What Are You Doing in Denmark podcast, Derek was joined by two hilarious comedians and friends of the show. @jeffersonbondcomedy and @andersmorgenstierne returned to @waydidpod for a hilarious discussion on convenience culture and how it, or the lack of it, can impact your move to Denmark with @derekhartmandk

Along the way, some great conversations and laughs with rants about convenience, Uber, and some opinions and theories that we need to ensure you know were shared as SATIRE 🤪

As always happens on social media platforms, we are certain the humor will be fully understood, appreciated, and supported. Please leave happy comments below to prove this 👇

🇩🇰 What exactly is Folkemødet, and why do thousands of Danes travel to a small island every June to attend it?

In this episode of What Are You Doing in Denmark @waydidpod Derek Hartman @derekhartmandk and Brooke Black @brookeblackjust are joined by returning guest Brooke Fossey @nearlydanishdame to explore one of Denmark’s most fascinating democratic traditions.

Brooke attended this year’s Folkemødet through the Wildcard program, giving her a unique perspective as an American living in Denmark. Together, the three unpack what Folkemødet is, why it exists, and whether it really succeeds in bringing ordinary citizens together with politicians, journalists, businesses, and organizations.

Along the way, they discuss Danish political culture, civic engagement, and the question Brooke heard over and over firsthand, “What is being Danish?”.

Whether you’ve never heard of Folkemødet or you’ve always wondered if it’s worth attending, this episode will help you make Denmark’s democracy make sense.

🚀 Most people think sending someone to space is something only government agencies or billionaires can do. In Denmark, a group of volunteers disagrees.

This week on What Are You Doing in Denmark, Derek and Conrad are joined by Jørgen, from Copenhagen
Suborbitals, the volunteer-run organization working to become the first amateur team in the world to launch a human into space. We discuss how nearly 80 volunteers from all walks of life are building rockets in their spare time, one ambitious step at a time.

In the process, we explore one of Denmark’s most unique cultural strengths: the power of foreninger
(voluntary associations), trust, and the freedom for ordinary people to pursue extraordinary ideas together.

🎙️Some of the best advice we’ve ever shared on What Are You Doing in Denmark didn’t come from us, it came from some of our smartest (and funniest) Danish guests.

We pulled together a handful of our favorite moments into a brand new episode, and in this compilation, you’ll hear advice from Sofie Hagen, Cecilia Bau, Mathias Bach, and Steven Feraru on everything from making friends and learning Danish to navigating Danish bureaucracy.

Derek, Brooke, and Conrad reflect on what pieces of advice they have applied since the original recordings and what we still need to work on. Along the way you’ll get a lot of laughs with tips on finding your place in Denmark, and why standing out might actually be your biggest strength.

If you don’t yet have Danish friends to show you the way and share their wisdom, please borrow ours!

The best part? If one of these conversations leaves you wanting more, we’ve linked each guest’s original full episode in the show notes so you can dive even deeper. So check out this episode wherever you get your podcasts, on the Robe Trotting YouTube channel, and via @cphpost

Have you ever wondered whether something was a relationship issue... or just a cultural difference?

This week on What Are You Doing in Denmark, we answered a message from a listener who’s been wondering exactly that in her relationship with a Danish partner.

Along the way, Brooke lets us in on what it was like dating and marrying a Dane while living in her home country and now his. Derek shares the pros and cons of living in Denmark with a partner who is non-Danish and from the same native culture.

While it seems like relationship complexities defy borders, this episode does offer plenty of advice, relatable experiences, and food for thought and it turned into one of the most honest conversations we’ve had about what it feels like to rebuild your identity in another country and why that invisible work can be so exhausting.

Is the problem with one of them or simply the reality of bringing two cultures together? (Listen and let us know)

🇩🇰 Denmark is often seen as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world, and compared to most places, that’s true. But this week on What Are You Doing in Denmark, we learned just why progress isn’t something you achieve once and then get to forget about.

Derek sat down with Steve Taylor from Copenhagen Pride to talk about where Denmark has led the way, where it’s standing still, and why Pride still matters, even in a country with such a strong reputation for equality.

In this episode, you’ll hear about:
🏳️‍🌈 The rights many people assume already exist (but don’t)
🏳️‍🌈 Why attitudes in Copenhagen don’t always representative the whole country
🏳️‍🌈 Where Denmark falls short with LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and trans rights
🏳️‍🌈 The growing pushback against Pride across Europe
🏳️‍🌈 Why Pride can be both a protest and a celebration

“Progress isn’t a finish line. It’s a process.”

🇩🇰 Why does Denmark have so many festivals?

It’s not just about music… for a few months every year, Denmark transforms. People spend more time outside, make plans months in advance (okay, that’s normal), travel across the country to see friends, and gather in forests, fields, parks, castles, and campsites.

In episode 159 of What Are You Doing in Denmark, Derek and Brooke sat down with Heartland founder Ulrik Ørum-Petersen to explore why festivals have become such a huge part of Danish culture.

From Roskilde and Smukfest to Heartland, Copenhell, Distortion, and beyond, we talk about:

🎶 Why Denmark has one of the highest concentrations of festivals per capita in the world
🍻 Why Roskilde is a rite of passage for so many Danes
☀️ How festival season reflects Denmark’s relationship with summer
🎪 What different festivals say about different parts of Danish culture
🇩🇰 Whether attending a festival might actually help internationals understand Denmark a little better

Listen wherever you get your podcasts, watch the episode on YouTube, or find it in @cphpost

What’s your favorite Danish festival, and which one is still on your bucket list?

Denmark has never had more international residents than it does today.

Companies say they need international talent. Politicians talk about attracting skilled workers.

So why do so many internationals still feel uncertain about building a future here?

This week on What Are You Doing in Denmark, Derek sat down for a conversation with Dan Rosenberg from Copenhagen Capacity to discuss one of the biggest challenges facing Denmark: not attracting international talent, but keeping it.

We talk about:
🎙️ Feeling “professionally stuck”
🎙️ The risks of changing jobs on a work permit
🎙️ Why career progression can be difficult for internationals
🎙️ The gap between economic reality and political rhetoric
🎙️ What Denmark could do differently

Do internationals in Denmark feel welcomed… or simply needed? Listen to the whole episode on all podcast platforms, YouTube, and via @cphpost

We’d love to hear your experience:

What has been the biggest challenge or biggest surprise about building a life and career in Denmark?

This week on What Are You Doing in Denmark, we sat down with musician and songwriter Clara Sofie, one of the writers behind Denmark’s Eurovision entry “Før vi går hjem,” performed by Søren Torpegaard Lund.

After years of struggling to make the @eurovision finale, Denmark is bringing one of the most talked about entries this year!

We talked about:
🎤 how the song was written in basically 30 minutes
🍷 the chaotic songwriting camp that created it
🇩🇰 why this year feels different for Denmark
✨ what Eurovision means to Danes
🤩 how it felt watching @soerentorpegaardlund win Dansk Melodi Gran Prix

🎙️ Excuse our language, because this week on What Are You Doing in Denmark, we are talking about curse words, their role in culture and how often English curse words, like the F-bomb, get tossed around - in particular by the youth.

This was a major culture shock for both Brooke and Derek, since they are both native English-speakers living in Denmark.

💣 Have you experienced this yourself?
💣 How do you handle the prevalence of “bad words” for your cross-culture kids?
💣 How do you know the right way to respond when you’re cursed at in Danish?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments, by DM, or in our speakpipe (it’s always in the links and always open for a voice note). We have already gotten a lot of feedback about the episode and want to hear your thoughts for a potential follow up!
