1st reconnaissance visit for potential water activities and circuit tour in the waters of Sevilla, Bohol.

Well, it was also my first time joining the team for professional work, and it honestly felt like a sponty trip. Just received a memo with a 6:30 call time at the kayak station to explore the waters of Sevilla connecting to the Loboc River, and that’s it. Not a detailed itinerary, just a “what’s your plan ugma? Sevilla ta, bisita tas tubig nila didto.”

But it ended up being a formal visit to the municipal hall to meet with some officials, plus a hike of about a kilometer kapin, all while wearing my paddling outfit. Pero maayo gani kay polo pud among uniform. Maayo gani.

Exploring this side of Bohol is a reminder that we still have not explored much of our waters, or even heard the stories they carry, the cultures they bring. They are just there, waiting to be explored, waiting to be appreciated, waiting to be protected. And I am grateful to be part of a team where everyone has a heart for nature and adventure.

This is the hope for the place. That Sevilla will have its own identity. It will not become another area where, as development progresses, it slowly loses its natural features and spaces. It will be another area where people from different walks of life experience and learn about Sevilla and Sevilla omsim.

It will be a place where farms continue to thrive alongside the river, where carabaos swim after a long day in the field, where birds of different colors continue to fly confidently above the river, and where the colors of the place stay intact, blue waters that are full of life and green riverbanks with growing native trees and crops. Structures will continue to be built by local craftsmen and through locally sourced materials.

This is our hope for Sevilla. This is our hope for the waterways of Bohol.

Keep paddling. 💦 As I constantly check Strava if how close we are to the 12-KM end destination. 😝

First time to kayak solo. My longest distance yet at 12 KM, longest time at 4 hours. In a new route. First time to see Kawasan Falls in Balilihan, 2 towns away from Maribojoc. It was long pero keri because we had several stops to rest, breathe, talk and eat snacks.

@jmbalatayo reminded me to go at my own pace because I can be impatient. @markreynaldb teased me to go faster cause I was always further behind in the group. So unsaon?? 😝

Especially challenged-motivated seeing our Papa kayaking alongside us.🤪 He originally thought we were going for our usual river clean-up route. I assumed we were only covering about 4 KM that day too. Pero it's a happy and healthy budol. WORTH ITTT 🫶🏽

Especially loved it when we kayak in the rain for maybe half an hour and finally seeing the end of the route, Kawasan Falls. I made it! 💃

Thank you for organizing Bohol Kayak Club, @kayakasia.ph and @wayne.mercer.50! Sa mga taga-Bohol or for those traveling to Bohol, kuyog ta sunod puhon!! Once a month :)

To explore is innate. To share, is what I've been teaching myself everyday.

Paddled into a dead end branch embraced by branches of a black mangrove shrub. By the river's mouth we expected lumpy seas but the stillness in the channels kept us in and never got us to venture further out. We just let our paddles decide to where, our conversations led to whether and never minded the weather Josie is currently bringing.

Tomorrow is international clean-up day by the way, wherever you maybe, a beach, sea or trail somewhere, let's do our share or sign up to a cleanup near you - let's help keep our nature trails rubbish free.

Enjoying that brief sunshine before the daily downpour. It's been going like this for over a week now and the river's been pastel brown for so long. Feels like a different river, a different place...
