“East by West” is up at the Pennsylvania State Capitol building in the East Rotunda! In the fall of 2025, Senator Carolyn Comitta’s office invited the Department of Art + Design to showcase our program in an exhibition at the Capitol. When I volunteered to organize the show, I wanted it to include both West Chester University BFA alumni and current students from the class of ‘26. On view are the creative works from 42 artists and designers working in painting, drawing, printmaking, poster design, UX design, and motion graphics. It will be up until May 29th… Hope you can come see it! It was wonderful that so many alumni could come out for the opening reception on Tuesday. 🫶🎉 Extra special thanks to Michael Hartman (Chief of Staff for Senator Comitta), David Jones (Art + Design, Chairperson), Jen Bacon (College of Arts and Humanities, Dean), and Justin Snyder (Capitol Complex, Special Events Coordinator). #wcuartdesign #artsatwcu @wcuartdesign @artsatwcu @wcu_paintingdrawing @wcu_printmaking @wcu_gaid @wcupa

Little Nibbles🐇 Originally created during my junior year, this project just got a facelift for my portfolio. I’ll never turn the opportunity to draw a cute little critter for a branding project, especially when a little treat is involved.😋 #juniordesigner #creative #visualbranding #packagingdesign #truckwrapdesign

DON Q RUM X BOMBA REBRAND 💃🇵🇷🥃 Project: Rebrand Don Q rum while simultaneously creating a label that will act as a Trojan Horse for educating mainland US voters about the negative impact that the Jones Act has on the people, animals and land of Puerto Rico. Medium: Illustrator Concept: This rebrand reconnects Don Q to the deep cultural roots of Puerto Rico by drawing inspiration from bomba, an Afro Puerto Rican tradition born from resistance, rhythm, and community. Historically, bomba was danced on and around rum barrels, transforming the tools of labor into instruments of expression and protest. By weaving this history into the brand, the project honors bomba as both a cultural heartbeat and a symbol of defiance against oppression. That same spirit of resilience remains essential today as Puerto Rico continues to face the lasting weight of the Jones Act, a century old maritime law that restricts which ships can bring goods to the island. This law raises the cost of everyday items, slows the arrival of essential supplies, and places an ongoing strain on the people of Puerto Rico. The reimagined Don Q embraces the power of culture and the rhythm of bomba to celebrate Puerto Rican identity and inspire awareness, solidarity, and meaningful change. Thank you to @hoffermedia and @wcu_gaid for making this work come to life! It was such a wonderful learning experience! And lastly, but certainly not least, a special thank you to Mitzy and her mother for sharing your story and passion for such a beauitful island and community! Date: Fall 2025

This animated student project by Sam McConnell (@samstudio.jpg) chronicles the evolution of music, taking viewers on a journey from ancient rhythms and medieval melodies to modern beats and digital soundscapes. Through vibrant visuals and expressive characters, the film explores how cultural, technological, and creative shifts have shaped the way we make and experience music. • #motiondesign #graphicdesign #wcuartdesign #animation #music #musichistory #illustration
