Gemma and Ian chat to David Strike, whose extraordinary life in diving has taken him from learning to dive with BSAC in 1961, to the Royal Navy, oceanographic research, commercial diving in the North Sea, technical diving, rebreathers, teaching, writing, publishing and some of the most influential diving events and conferences around the world.

David was one of Australia's early pioneers of technical diving and the first recreational diver in Australia to dive with Nitrox.

He has written hundreds of articles, authored books, helped shape diving education and media, organised major diving conferences and received several Lifetime Achievement Awards. He is also a Fellow of the Explorers Club of New York.

But behind all those achievements is something we love hearing about on The BiG Scuba Podcast — a genuine lifelong passion for diving. ❤️🤿

The ocean has always been a place where I find wonder, beauty, connection, and healing. Visions of the Sea grew from my desire to share that experience—to give people time underwater, surrounded by the magnificence of our ocean, even if one never puts on a mask.

And right now, I believe we need these real connections more than ever.

The new Status of Coral Reefs of the World report is a sobering reminder of what is happening beneath the surface. Around the world, coral reefs are being impacted by increasingly frequent marine heatwaves, and in many places reefs are being hit again before they have enough time to recover.

But there is another part of this story, coral reefs are resilient. Given the right conditions and enough time between disturbances, they can recover.

In April and May, I spent five weeks diving and filming throughout Indonesia, including the Banda Sea and Raja Ampat. I have witnessed tremendous changes to coral reefs during more than three decades underwater, including bleaching, coral loss, and reefs that are very different from those I first experienced years ago.

What I witnessed in Indonesia gives me hope.

Corals are tiny animals that, generation after generation, create the living structure upon which an entire reef ecosystem depends. Their growth creates shelter, feeding grounds, nurseries, and habitat for an astonishing diversity of life. When we lose coral, we don’t simply lose something beautiful. We lose the foundation that makes life on a reef possible.

The worldwide state of coral reefs is serious. We cannot look away from what is happening. We must do everything in our power to reduce the pressures we place on these ecosystems and give reefs the opportunity to recover. But I don’t want our relationship with the ocean to be built only around what we are losing.

🐢 CITIZEN SCIENCE SUCCESS IN KARANGASEM! 🎉

Three months ago, we visited Amed to host turtle awareness workshops for local dive centres, covering turtle biology, responsible interaction, and how to contribute to our citizen science programme by submitting turtle photos. Last July, we headed back to Fresh Fins Diving in Amed to share what all of those submissions revealed — and the results are something to celebrate!

🐢 The numbers speak for themselves:
🌊 14 participating dive centres and 100+ attendees
🌊 30 unique turtle encounters submitted by the community
🌊 13 individual turtles identified as a baseline for the Karangasem area: 10 Hawksbill and 3 Green turtles
🌊 Most observations captured foraging behaviour, but courtship behaviour and even nesting were also recorded!

None of this would have been possible without the enthusiasm and dedication of the Karangasem diving community. We were once again welcomed with such warmth, and the feedback and passion to protect local turtles was truly inspiring. This is citizen science at its best! 🙏

This activity was supported by the Women Divers Hall of Fame scholarship, through Aulia Zeintrinanda's application.

The Bottom Dwellers Dive Shack extends our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, shipmates, and loved ones of Master Chief Mary Bonnin, USN (Ret.).

We were incredibly fortunate to have Mary join us on The Bottom Dwellers Dive Shack and give her the opportunity to tell her remarkable and inspiring story in her own words. We had a great time with her, and she was truly a pleasure to meet, talk with, and work with.

Mary’s accomplishments helped break barriers and paved the way for those who followed her in the diving community. Her story, her service, and the legacy she leaves behind will continue to inspire divers for generations to come. Up until recently, she was the only female diver to achieve the rank of Master Diver.

We are grateful that we had the opportunity to spend time with Mary and help preserve a small part of her story.

Officially stepped onto the professional Scuba ladder and transitioned from being a recreational diver to a professional dive leader. I can’t thank @diveutila and all of my incredible instructors enough for all they taught me and helped me achieve. I am SO grateful and excited to officially announce that I’m a certified scuba diving instructor!

Becoming an instructor has been a dream of mine since I first tried scuba diving in 2017. Along the way, I’ve been lucky enough to learn from incredible instructors, meet amazing dive buddies, and have experiences that completely shaped my love for diving! Which inspired me to pursue this path myself.

If you’re in the Michigan area and want to get in the water, I’d love to dive with you! Whether you’re: -Trying scuba for the first time -Getting certified for an upcoming trip -or Looking to advance your training

Celebrated my 100th (and 101st) dive(s) this morning! Forever grateful that I made the decision to pick up this hobby so many years ago and that now I have the opportunity to make it a bigger part of my life. Looking forward to hundreds and hundreds of more underwater adventures to come🤿🤙🏼🪸🦈
