🎵 IS STREAMING ENOUGH? 💿

For independent musicians, streaming has become the centre of almost everything we do. But is it really enough to sustain a career in music?

Here’s something worth thinking about…

I can make roughly the same profit from selling just FOUR vinyl records as I would from generating 10,000 streams on Spotify! 🤯

That’s quite a sobering thought, isn’t it?

In Episode 6 of SHARING WHAT REALLY WORKS, I’m talking about why I believe independent artists need to look beyond streaming platforms when it comes to releasing their music.

I’ll be sharing my own experiences of releasing music on vinyl and CD, using platforms like Bandcamp, creating merchandise and, perhaps most importantly, giving our audiences different ways to support what we do.

I’m certainly not suggesting we abandon streaming. Far from it! But I do believe we need to stop treating it as the ONLY measure of success.

Because sometimes a handful of people who genuinely value your music can make a bigger difference than thousands of passive listeners. ❤️

🎬 EPISODE 6 – IS STREAMING ENOUGH?

If you’re an independent musician trying to navigate today’s music industry, I hope you’ll find something useful in this episode.

💬 I’d love to know your thoughts. Have you explored ways of generating income from your music beyond streaming?

🎵 WHAT DOES YOUR MUSIC LEGACY MEAN TO YOU?

Episode 5 of SHARING WHAT REALLY WORKS is out today.

This week I’m talking about something that has become increasingly important to me as an independent artist — legacy.

I’ve been releasing music for many years now, and one of the reasons I still make albums, revisit older songs and care about how my catalogue is preserved is because I want the music I create to have a life beyond the moment it’s released.

We spend so much time as independent artists thinking about the next single, the next playlist, the next stream or the next opportunity that sometimes we forget to look backwards at what we’ve already created.

Those songs are part of our story.

In Episode 5 I talk about why music legacy matters to me, why my catalogue is something I increasingly value, and why I believe independent artists should think about the long-term life of their music — not just what happens during release week.

If you’re an independent musician building a body of work of your own, I’d love to know:

Do you ever think about your musical legacy?

🎥 Episode 5 of SHARING WHAT REALLY WORKS is on my YouTube channel now.

We're here to amplify voices here in the North East.

One of the most common things we hear from artists taking part in our opportunities is how valuable it is to connect with like-minded people, whether that's forming collaborations, building support networks or simply sharing experiences.

Our Songwriting Camp with Jodie Nicholson, Amelia Coburn, Chad Rodgers and Joe Ramsey has now been moved to 17–19 November, creating a space to experiment, learn and create alongside other artists.

📅 New dates: 17–19 November
📍 Middlesbrough Town Hall

Applications are now open until 3 November. Apply via sonicfutures.org

As seen on tour with @ameliacoburn and at next month’s @twisterellafestival, @toriawooff heads to @thewaitingroom in Eaglescliffe next March to promote the release of her incredible new album ‘Aleister’.

Following her acclaimed self-titled debut album, championed by the likes of Uncut, Clash, Shindig, Record Collector, BBC Radio 6 and Radio X, Toria Wooff (Tor-ee-a Woo-f) enters a darker and more assured chapter with her second album, Aleister. Across eleven brooding folksongs, tape-saturated textures, drones, vintage keyboards, orchestral flourishes and richly detailed acoustic instrumentation surround a voice capable of moving from hushed intimacy to startling intensity.

On stage, that atmosphere takes on a life of its own. Whether playing solo or joined by her close-knit band, Wooff’s live show expands the strange, shadowy world of her records without losing the restraint at the heart of the songs. Fingerpicked acoustic guitar, spectral keys, textured strings and understated ensemble playing gather around Wooff’s commanding vocal, allowing moments of near silence to sit alongside passages of sweeping, darkly cinematic intensity.

On 22–24 September, Jodie Nicholson will be hosting a Songwriting Camp alongside Joe Ramsey, Amelia Coburn and Chad Rodgers.

Jodie Nicholson combines introspective lyricism, brooding piano, subtle electronics and delicate guitars to create a captivating listen. Radio 1 presenter Sian Eleri has praised Jodie for her “harmonies to die for”, while Jess Isatt described her as “not your average singer-songwriter”.

Earlier this year, we announced the collaboration between @sonic_futures X @hertfordquarter, for Middlesbrough artists, @ameliacoburn, @jodienicholsonmusic and @joeramseymusic (@wearebeforeclose), to record new music at Hotel Quebec Studios in Hertford.

Their first track, ‘roisin’, is out now, with ‘circles’ arriving in September. Both songs were written at a @quietcrownmusic x Sonic Futures Songwriting Camp alongside @marinajosephinaa and Tom Blackwell.

Built around three-part harmonies, ‘roisin’ blends indie-folk influences from The Staves and First Aid Kit with a nod to Crosby, Stills & Nash.

See the creative journey of recording the new tracks within the week, to performing at the BEAM Showcase via Generator HQ YouTube.

To celebrate, the trio are hosting a Songwriting Camp with @sounds_by_chad. Find out more and apply via sonicfutures.org.
