There’s something special about having a place to get lost in nature, right outside your own door. Here, carefully mowed paths wind through expansive perennial gardens and meadows, inviting you into a landscape that’s also a thriving habitat for pollinators. Charbrook Farm reinterprets the familiar forms of a New England farmstead as a contemporary place to work and gather. Designed by @we.are.opal in collaboration with @wearestimson, the project comprises two connected buildings within a larger working farm that supports landscape experimentation and plant cultivation. The buildings are clad in locally harvested softwood and left to weather naturally towards grey, helping them settle gradually into the surrounding landscape. When I first started thinking about my wellness space, I always knew I wanted the design to be led by the land. So hiring a landscape architect before an architect felt like the obvious place to start. It also felt pretty fitting to then work with a studio founded by a 10th-generation farmer, based on their active farm and plant nursery, whose ethos is centered around maintaining or restoring wildness. For our second meeting, I went up to their farm in Massachusetts and we spent the day walking the grounds, digging into the history of my property, discussing potential layouts and working through some pretty niche questions… How can we use the landscape to create natural wind paths and minimize mosquitoes? How can we not just preserve but also restore the wetlands over time? Where should we plant crops and native species? How does the sun move across the property? How do we create spaces that feel intentional without over-designing the land? Ultimately: what does it actually mean to lead with land stewardship when designing a place from the ground up? What I loved most was being surrounded by people who understood that these details aren’t really details at all. They’re the fundamentals. Because if you’re trying to create a place that helps people experience what living well can feel like, the environment can’t just be the backdrop. It has to be part of the experience. And on a more personal note, after a long stretch of rezoning delays, spending a day actually designing, imagining and problem-solving was exactly the reminder I needed of why I started this in the first place. Things are progressing where they can, albeit pretty slowly. There’s still a very long way to go, but days like this make it feel a little more real. #foundernotes #landscapearchitecturedesign #femaleentrepreneur

Greetings from Los Angeles!!! BSLA and the New England chapters represented(!) at the ASLA National Conference... 🌴😎 Swipe for a few snapshots New England showed up in people and in projects; on stage, in the expo, and throughout the streets and spaces of #ASLA2026, bringing issues and ideas of our region. From Chapter Presidents Council and Trustee meetings with chapter leaders nationwide, to chance encounters with colleagues and classmates, to new products and initiatives... We loved seeing emerging professionals, students, firm leaders and industry friends sharing challenges and opportunities to advance our work, together. Carbon sequestration to inclusive play, urban forests to tree health, human rehab to waterfront resilience... There was also the celebration of milestones. Gary Hilderbrand, thank you for your tenure as chair of the landscape architecture program at Harvard GSD! 👏👏👏 Did you know? The conclusion of the ASLA National Conference means the transfer of power to new ASLA officers. Michelle Crowley, thank YOU for your tenure as president of BSLA!!! 💚💚💚 Welcome President Andrew --- #landscapearchitecturecommunity

What happens when an entire landscape is built over a parking structure? At Harvard’s Science and Engineering Complex in Allston, MA, the six-acre landscape had to balance structural constraints with stormwater management, accessibility, maintenance, and the experience of moving through the campus. Designed by @wearestimson , the project uses bioretention basins, underground cisterns, engineered soils, and a combination of concrete and stabilized aggregate pathways. Organic-Lock Stabilized Aggregate (OLSA) was selected for the secondary pathways, providing a permeable, durable, low-maintenance surface that complements the primary concrete circulation routes. The landscape was recognized with a 2024 Boston Society of Landscape Architects General Design Merit Award. 120 tons of OLSA in Natural Stone Dust were supplied by @readcustomsoilsrcs Read the full case study at the link in Bio. #LandscapeArchitecture #LandscapeDesign #PermeableSurfaces #StormwaterManagement #GreenInfrastructure #OrganicLock #OLSA
