We’ll be at the ASLA conference next week, sharing stories and ideas from across our practice.

Matt Langan and Glen Valentine, joined by Kimberly Colich of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, will talk about the transformational Doan Brook park project. Come check it out!

Date: Friday, Sept 18 from 10:45 AM - 12:00 PM PT

Place: Room 153

Talk Description: A transformative plan for Northeast Ohio’s Doan Brook removes an aging dam and restores stream flow, converting failed infrastructure into civic opportunity. Sediment management and ecological restoration reconnect Horseshoe Park to its riparian landscape. This landscape architecture-led process relied on robust community engagement, highly iterative design, and substantial technical engineering to inform a shared and grounded vision. Now this resilient public park floods, but it remains universally accessible 365 days a year. by @wearestimson

The Hardberger Park Robert LB Tobin Land Bridge was recently highlighted by The Guardian.

“The Phil Hardberger park, a 311-acre public space in San Antonio, Texas, is an ambitious effort to restore native prairie land and improve residents’ quality of life.

Its centerpiece is the 150ft-wide Robert LB Tobin land bridge that provides a safe and scenic crossing over a six-lane highway for wildlife.

The landscape architecture firms Stimson Studio and Rialto Studio preserved or restored 75% of the park’s area to prairie land, and designated the remaining 25% for picnic areas, an urban ecology center and parking. ‘The balance is in favor of wildlife and nature,’ said Lauren Stimson, a principal at Stimson Studio.

Inspired by European wildlife crossings, Stimson Studio then conceived of a land bridge – accessible to people and animals – that would read like a natural extension of the park.

At its midsection, the bridge is 150ft wide. To make sure wildlife would not be disturbed by people, the designers pushed the area accessible to pedestrians to one side and integrated a steep berm and plantings to buffer the two groups.

The land bridge opened in 2020. Within six months, wildlife biologists had spotted coyotes, deer, bobcats and small mammals crossing it.”

In June we welcomed the Horticultural Club of Boston (est 1911) to Charbrook as the first stop on their summer circuit. We started in the grange with an introduction about how we built our farm, how this place informs our design work and why we eventually built a landscape architecture studio here for STIMSON. Alongside our farm manager, Leland @leland.q and Associate Principal, Matt @matt.langan we toured 70 plant lovers through our working gardens, nursery plots and livestock pastures.
.
We ended with an exhibit of tree spading a smallish Kentucky coffee tree. @ethantetreault1989 behind the skid steer demonstrated the art of spading, one blade at a time, while Leland and Steve balled and burlapped her carefully. All in all, an educational demonstration of what it takes to grow and harvest trees in our rocky New England soils.
.
We are grateful to those who help tend our gardens, @nathangrigos with his eco-conscious equipment and our summer interns who have learned how to install irrigation in our holding yard and how to differentiate their weeds from their annuals. Many thanks to all those near and far who grew annuals, perennials and veg for us this season, especially to @bunkerfarmplants who has the most incredible collection of coveted British plants on the east coast, and always seems to have that eclectic annual I’ve been searching years for (in her back yard). And maraming salamat po to @singdt45 who grew us enough tomato and veggie seedlings this year to feed a small nation. And to the folks @rattlerootfarm who gave us the source for their magic compost and some great starts in exchange for our grass fed beef. And to the legend himself, horticulturalist Warren Leach who gifted us a Hippophae rhamnoides like it was no big deal, when actually, it is a Very. Big. Deal. If you are in the hard-to-find-plants-club than you know what I’m talking about. Thanks to all for the rare visit. Please come back anytime! xx by @wearestimson

We are thrilled to welcome our team, guests, and community back to The Ark. While we’ve restored a name rooted in history, many hands have been at work refreshing this special slice of Deer Isle.

New walkways make for more accessible approaches to the inn and restaurant, and the reintroduction of native species like birch and blueberry anchor us in this place. Our landscape architects @wearestimson and contractors @northwoodsgranite_ made sure every new addition to our grounds felt as natural and meant to be as possible.

Long before Deer Isle was famous for lobster, the island was known for its granite. Thanks to a generous donation by Mark Cormier, The Ark’s new landscaping incorporates stone from here.

It takes a village to create a place as special as this, and we are lucky to have partners who share our vision for a more accessible and sustainable Ark. by @wearestimson

We are excited to share a deeper dive into our projects in process on a new web page. For years, we have been working on a resilient coastal campus in Maine, a floodable park in Ohio, an adaptable urban waterfront in Rhode Island, a restorative campus commons in Massachusetts, a reflective garden in Maryland, a wild urban connector in Rhode Island, and a restored legacy landscape in Ohio. Follow along as we and our collaborators develop and build these projects over the years to come.

It’s been almost 20 years since we began working at Hardberger Park in San Antonio, Texas. From an early concept sketch to construction in the field, the vision for the Salado Creek Parking and Picnic Area remained rooted in preserving the existing woodland. Contractors carefully formed foundations for the corten wheel stops around Live Oaks and Cedar Elms, helping create a parking landscape that responds to and grows alongside the trees already there. by @wearestimson

Celebrating 2026 promotions! Our newest Associate, Zoë Holland, shares a few thoughts on her current projects.

Zoë: I’m pictured here in the muddy intertidal zone of Casco Bay, the site of a former baked bean factory that will soon host a public waterfront campus and bike trail. After nearly four years of work on this project, I’m excited to see construction progress this summer and fall. Further south in the Narragansett Bay, I’m managing the last stretch of construction documents for a riverfront park in the center of downtown Providence. by @wearestimson

Celebrating 2026 promotions! Our new Senior Associates share a few thoughts on their current projects and the upcoming year.

Jess Alpert: This spring, I am looking forward to seeing the projects I have managed over the past few years take shape. Among them is an innovative project at Amherst College—the new Student Center and Dining Commons—designed by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with Sasaki. In addition, a farmhouse residence in New York with Barlis Wedlick Architects is under construction. Watching both of these sites come to life will be a highlight of my summer and fall. Here, I am pictured measuring the rootball of an Acer rubrum (Red Maple) at Charbrook Nursery.

Megan Little: These days I’m working on institutional and residential projects, but I’m especially excited about one residential project’s elaborate water features and lush perennial plantings (inspired by an antique stained-glass window found in the old house). This has taken me on some fun adventures, from tagging 40-year-old Ilex opaca in Pennsylvania to figuring out how to move 150 koi across the country. I’m also leading our office’s mentorship program, which has been a really rewarding way to connect with and support colleagues.

Heather Harris: I am currently focused on a select range of residential projects, allowing for a thoughtful approach to craft and detail. Much of my time has been in the studio, which has been rewarding, while several projects are now moving into construction, with completion anticipated later this year and into next. I value the diversity of work at STIMSON and the collaborative spirit of our teams, where shared expertise and consistent support strengthen both our process and outcomes. by @wearestimson

Celebrating 2026 promotions! Our new Associate Principals share a few thoughts on their practice and the upcoming year.

Gregory Tuzzolo: I’m excited to advance several major project efforts at STIMSON. Our team will complete final construction documents for the Providence Riverwalk Resilience project—an ambitious reimagining of a cherished civic waterfront. I’ll also be leading early design work for new healthcare, higher education, and museum projects across New England, while supporting ongoing construction at Harvard’s Pritzker Hall and Northeastern University’s Roux Institute campus in Portland, Maine. I’m honored to step into this role and to continue contributing to STIMSON’s leadership and design culture. Each project presents an opportunity not only for personal and professional growth but to thoughtfully shape the integrity and resilience of our shared built environment.

Michael Lindquist: I’m currently managing a range of projects, including the Salem Pioneer Village, Harvard’s A.R.T. in Allston, Hamilton College’s Innovation Center, and a residence on the North Shore. I’ve also been focused on planting design and horticulture education initiatives within the office and am designing large-scale planting plans for the Brown’s ILSB and the Providence River Walk. With spring approaching, I’m looking forward to construction picking up and to new projects starting, such as the Larz Anderson Park ice rink renovation and a science center for Colby College.

Matt Langan: In 2026, two long-advancing public realm projects will move into construction, representing more than $50 million in landscape rehabilitation. Seeing these efforts take physical shape will be deeply rewarding. I’m proud of our team’s dedication throughout the process and look forward to new opportunities to apply our rigor and values to civic, recreational, and cultural spaces—strengthening the communities they serve for generations to come. by @wearestimson
