Imagine a space where kids can roam, investigate and play outside. It’s truly magical.

When play is the curriculum 💚

This week’s theme: landforms around the world! 🌎

Hands-on invitations like this one turn something far away and abstract into something children can see, touch, and experience in a memorable way. Squeezing colored vinegar onto a baking soda volcano and watching it bubble over gives them a real, physical way to connect to what a volcano is, and so many creative experiments followed as the Wildlings led their own ideas of how to extend the invitation! 🌋

Nature was really showing off this week at Wildlings! 🤩

With the tide so far out, we found hundreds, if not thousands, of little sea snails covering the pools on the exposed sandflats of Boca Ciega Bay. We also found hermit crabs, banded tulip snails of many sizes, conchs, a horseshoe crab molt, and tunicates, curious filter-feeding animals with the most interesting texture: firm, gel-like, rubbery, and bumpy all at the same time!

There’s nothing better than exploring and discovering with the Wildlings! 💚

We had a wonderful week of growing wild, even in the rain! 🌧️🌿 With the lightning mostly steering clear of our class sites at Bay Vista Park and War Veterans’ Memorial Park, we embraced the rain as another opportunity for nature connection and learning. From wildlife discoveries, to learning about Florida landforms and creating our own, muddy feet, curious questions, imaginative play along the Boca Ciega Bay shoreline, mud kitchen creations, rolling and racing down hills, puddle jumping, friendly games of chase under the rain drops, mushroom hunting, and continuing to settle into our Wildlings rhythm and budding friendships, we had another fantastic week of Wildlings fun!

This rainy weather made for a wonderfully peaceful, first day of landforms learning for the Wildlings, they made awesome landform creations, played in a giant puddle and rolled down a hill, our very own landform in our park. What a wonderful day.

Forest school honors the whole child: the ancient, sacred child who has a biological need to roam the outdoors, to climb, to navigate varied terrain, to be loud, to experiment, to take risks, to get dirty and wet while exploring the natural world, to feel a sense of belonging to the rhythms of the earth and their community, to observe and learn what it means to care for other creatures, to be trusted as capable learners by the adults around them, and to use all their senses to learn and discover.

This week at Wildlings, that looked like using a real hammer and nails, scrambling along the shoreline and climbing the mangroves, climbing higher up a tree than ever before, gently discovering sea snails, looking low on a nature scavenger hunt to find the things that usually get walked right past, asking questions about a horseshoe crab shell, and turning sticks into drumsticks, walking staffs, and tools for imaginative play.

At forest school, we see children as researchers and constructors of their world, capable of much more than we often give them the space or opportunity to show us. At Wildlings, they are honored as the capable humans they are. ❤️
