Did you know that there was a wave of Jersey Devil sightings in 1909? ⬇️

From January 16-23, newspapers from Philadelphia all the way across south Jersey to Cape May reported hundreds of eyewitness accounts of a strange creature that was terrorizing the Pine Barrens and towns on its outskirts.

While a unnaturally shaped winged being had been seen before (including high-profile 19th century sightings by Napoleon’s brother Joseph Bonaparte and Commodore Stephen Decatur) the sheer number of alleged encounters in 1909 caused a panic.

Some towns closed their schools. People locked themselves inside. Newspapers offered rewards for its capture. The Philadelphia Zoo put up $10,000 hoping they could nab the creature for an exhibit.

And as fast as the Jersey Devil was seen by seemingly everyone, it was gone.

Was this a hoax perpetrated to sell papers? A case of mass hysteria that started with a simple misidentification? Or were people genuinely seeing something?

We'll leave that for you to decide.

Did you know that a really terrible low budget Cold War propaganda film had a single scene filmed in Hazlet, New Jersey in 1958? ⬇️

“Rocket Attack USA” makes you want to hide under your desk, but for an entirely different reason. It tells the story of American secret agents attempting to uncover a Soviet missile launch on the United States in the days following Sputnik.

When one of the agents bids his wife farewell, it was done at the Hazlet Train Station. Why this location was chosen remains a mystery. Most filming was done in New York and used stock footage.

This movie was shot in 1958 and released in 1960. It has a 1.8 IMDB rating and runs an eternally long 65 minutes. I watched all of it to find this New Jersey connection.

🎬 If you want to punish yourself and see it firsthand, “Rocket Attack USA” (also known as “Five Minutes to Zero”) is available for free on Tubi and is in the public domain. The Hazlet scene is about 45 minutes in and lasts two minutes.
