Did you know that there was a wave of Jersey Devil sightings in 1909? ⬇️

From January 16-23, newspapers from Philadelphia all the way across south Jersey to Cape May reported hundreds of eyewitness accounts of a strange creature that was terrorizing the Pine Barrens and towns on its outskirts.

While a unnaturally shaped winged being had been seen before (including high-profile 19th century sightings by Napoleon’s brother Joseph Bonaparte and Commodore Stephen Decatur) the sheer number of alleged encounters in 1909 caused a panic.

Some towns closed their schools. People locked themselves inside. Newspapers offered rewards for its capture. The Philadelphia Zoo put up $10,000 hoping they could nab the creature for an exhibit.

And as fast as the Jersey Devil was seen by seemingly everyone, it was gone.

Was this a hoax perpetrated to sell papers? A case of mass hysteria that started with a simple misidentification? Or were people genuinely seeing something?

We'll leave that for you to decide.

It was on this day in Weird NJ history, October 12, 1730, that 300 people gathered to see an “Experiment or two tried on some Persons accused of Witchcraft.” Or did they?

While most people are familiar with the story of the infamous witch trials that took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 and 1693, less well known are the legends told in the Mount Holly, NJ area of women being tried for witchcraft in that town in 1730. The story may stem from an article that appeared on October 22, 1730 in the Pennsylvania Gazette, which allegedly chronicled a recent witch trial that had taken place in Mount Holly. The article explained in depth both the reasons those accused were suspected of practicing witchcraft as well as the actions undertaken to determine if they were truly tapping into dark powers. According to the Gazette, locals began fearing the worst when their animals began acting strangely.

“Burlington, Oct. 12. Saturday last at Mount-Holly, about 8 Miles from this Place, near 300 People were gathered together to see an Experiment or two tried on some Persons accused of Witchcraft…the Accused had been charged with making their Neighbour’s Sheep dance in an uncommon Manner, and with causing Hogs to speak and sing Psalms.” The ability to control the actions of animals had long been considered a surefire sign of witchery, and the citizens of Mount Holly would not stand for it. They rounded up those they held responsible, one witch and one wizard, and proceeded to test their innocence. A rowdy mob of 300 townsfolk forced a man and woman to undergo trials. To validate the results, two members of the rabble also underwent these tests as a sort of litmus to prove their fairness.

Tucked away in the backwoods, past a few miles and acres of beautiful farmland, is the beautiful and unimaginably unique home of artist @rickyoflunaparc, who began building his home in 1989, and will continue his project until his last day.
.
His whimsical and sophisticated home and property consist of mixed media such as metal, clay, glass, wood and cement.
.
I promise you that the images you see do absolutely no justice to the wonder of scheduling a tour and visiting this property. This is just a glimpse into the vast creativity that Ricky has put into his home.
.

This diner has the perfect combo of small-town New Jersey history, classic diner nostalgia, and horror-movie history.
.
The Blairstown Diner traces its history back to 1949, long before it became a destination for horror fans. Then, in 1979, Blairstown became one of the filming locations for the original Friday the 13th, released in 1980. The Blairstown Diner appears in the movie during the scene involving Steve Christy, and the actual diner is still operating today at 53 Route 94.
.
You can sit inside the very place where scenes from the original movie were filmed, grab a bite, and enjoy some memorabilia.
.
And if you’re a Friday the 13th fan, Blairstown is basically a little pilgrimage. The diner is just one piece of the larger filming location story, with other recognizable locations throughout the town and nearby areas, which includes the real life setting that became Camp Crystal Lake.
.
So If you’re hungry and looking for somewhere that feels extra spooky during the Halloween season, put the Blairstown Diner on your list. 👀🍔

I’m thrilled to share that I contributed a piece of writing to the new issue of @weirdnjinsta! An absolute dream byline for me. I was trying to pinpoint how I initially got into the magazine and realized I can’t even remember—it just feels like something that’s always been there. I have every single issue. Weird NJ taught me that the place I came from contained endless stories, that you could make something yourself and put it out into the world, and that even the most niche things can form a community. It has obviously informed a lot of my projects. It is remarkable that the publication has been doing its thing, in print, for as long as it has, and that even after decades of publishing, there is still so much to share. Weird NJ documents and preserves in its pages the kind of history that is too often lost forever.

For my piece for this issue, I went in search of “the weirdest thing” in a library collection, and I decided to ask the archivists at the Newark Public Library, because they have an amazing New Jersey history collection. When I reached out to @52gatos, she immediately told me she could pull the collection’s weirdest item, a death mask of baseball player and US government spy Moe Berg, for me to come look at. I really enjoyed getting to research this story and so happy to share it in the pages of my favorite magazine.

Thank you to Mark, Mark, and @chrisgeth for the opportunity! And thank you @52gatos for connecting me to this story and for all of the information.

I hope you’ll pick up a copy and enjoy! taken in Newark Public Library by @weirdnjinsta
