Sometimes dreams do come true.⁠ ⁠ A summer visit to the Serpentine Pavilion in London ultimately led Master of Architecture student Nuri Bhuiyan to intern with its designer, acclaimed Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum, and to an unexpected exhibition of Bhuiyan’s own work in Dhaka.⁠ ⁠ “I was just in awe of it,” Bhuiyan says of Tabassum’s design, “how she utilizes elemental aspects of light, form, and water to produce architecture, also bringing in cultural elements from Bangladesh and South Asia.”⁠ ⁠ A few months later, Bhuiyan would meet Tabassum at Penn on the occasion of the 2025 Weitzman School Awards.⁠ ⁠ 1) Nuri Bhuiyan visiting the 2025 Serpentine Pavilion in London by Marina Tabassum⁠ 2) Bhuiyan’s physical model of Library Love, where two triangular buildings combine to engage the three sides of the triangular site and feature a wooden trellis to unify the building programs.⁠ 3) “It was a wonderful feeling to have the motherland—a source of so much personal meaning to me—begin to tangibly connect to my work and career in design,” says Bhuiyan of her summer in Bangladesh. Thickened Envelopes received the Editor’s Choice Award for Vision for Materiality in the 2026 Architizer Vision Awards. The newest A is for Architecture Podcast episode is a conversation with Canadian American architect, professor, writer and architectural totem, Witold Rybczynski, Professor Emeritus at the @weitzman_arch, spoke with me about his very recent book, What Architecture Is, published by @yalebooks this year. Rather than the perhaps more expected question – what is architecture? – Witold turns it and us around. What Architecture Is is composed of seven chapters, riffing on John Ruskin’s Seven Lamps – exploring the value of History, Order, Ornament, Meaning, Beauty, Drawing and Place, but answering too to the critics of his 2013 How Architecture Works: A Humanist’s Toolkit, giving us the readers now the framework to judge buildings, and not just explain them. Grappling again with these, perhaps, architecture can find its public and speak to it again, becoming again the home of our collective memory, meaning and experience. Witold tells his story, which is a good one, and we approach the what and why of his propositions, after a manner. Penn Weitzman M.Arch Kolatan Studio | Istanbul Field Trip As part of the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design’s M.Arch Kolatan Studio field trip to Istanbul, students visited GAD Park, the office of GAD Architecture, along with Haliç Shipyard and several of GAD’s architectural projects across the city. At GAD Park, students explored the studio environment, ongoing projects, and GAD’s design approach. Gökhan Karakuş and Yusuf Çavdar gave a presentation on Istanbul and its architectural context, while Gokhan Avcıoglu joined the students for a discussion on architectural practice, design processes, and the profession. The program also included a visit to Haliç Shipyard, organized with the support of the Şehir Hatları General Directorate, offering students an opportunity to explore the site's industrial heritage and urban context firsthand. Throughout the field trip, students visited GAD projects including Ambar, Divan Kuruçeşme, Esma Sultan Mansion, and Gazhane. These visits provided opportunities to examine different architectural approaches, from adaptive reuse and the transformation of existing structures to the relationship between contemporary interventions, historical contexts, and urban environments. The field trip fostered an exchange of ideas on architecture, design, and the evolving urban fabric of Istanbul through direct engagement with the city, its architectural heritage, and contemporary practice. @weitzman_arch @ferdak @gkhnvcgl @gadfoundation

The semester has already featured guests such as Andrew Clancy and Colm Moore, Barry Bergdoll, José Toral and Marta Peris, Benedetta Tagliabue, Emiliano López and Mónica Rivera, and Amelyn Ng. 🌎 Arquitectura sin fronteras Estudiantes de @arquitectura_ORT, la @uofpenn y la @ufrj.oficial compartieron un taller internacional de arquitectura y paisajismo, con foco sobre la cuenca del arroyo Pantanoso y recorridos por Punta del Este, Punta Ballena y Piriápolis. A partir de este trabajo, los estudiantes de la University of Pennsylvania desarrollarán propuestas que combinan una estrategia territorial de conjunto con proyectos específicos para cada sitio, incluyendo etapas de implementación, alianzas público-privadas y financiamiento.
