Before and after... Another planting glow up today...

This time an area the client has always struggled with under a giant redwood tree.

Previously, they'd tried Ferns, but in the sandy, dry shady soil they hadn't worked.

Following right plant, right place, we started by raising the canopy of the low hanging branches before looking at the plants. This allowed more sunshine and opened up our options.

Next up, bulbs, for spring/early summer colour followed by summer options.

Plant list -

Euphorbia ascot rainbow
Carex evergreen everest
Carex evergreen ice dance
Cyclamen
Nepeta walkers low (for the sunny edges)

Thanks as always to @welland_vale
For the wonderful quality plants...

And don't forget, autumn is a great time for planting just as much as the spring!

It's amazing how quickly a show border that took 10 hours to make can be ripped apart by three under ten year olds!

In reality, they're excellent helpers for a truly family run company. Me and my dad built it... The boys looked after the plants before the show and then happily dug them all back up after, my mum and her partner helped move the plants, and my wife took payments during the sell off and supported me all the way through with my crazy idea of creating a full Rutland style cottage garden in only a 2.4m x 2.4m space...

@welland_vale are a family run garden nursery and @lincolnshireplantsupportsltd are a truly run family company just like ourselves.

Big shout out to all the small family run businesses who take the chance and support their lives through the hard work, talent and shear determination of themselves and their family members... They are truly one of a kind!

We love you all and think you are amazing!

Bronze Award 🥉🌿

Bronze for my second show border @rutlandflowershow

I’ll be honest — there’s a little disappointment. After the time, effort and thought that went into the garden, especially after having a sponsor pull out last minute.

The original brief was based solely around their plants, so there was a lot of last minute chopping and changing. Still, I was hoping to come away with a higher award than last year.

But I’m trying to take the result for what it is: another opportunity to learn.

My first show garden taught me a huge amount, and this one has taught me even more. From the design process and plant selection to the practical challenges of getting everything established and performing at its best on the day, there’s plenty I can take away and improve on.

The standard at the show is incredibly high, and being judged alongside some fantastic gardens has given me a clearer idea of where I need to raise my game.

So, yes, I’m disappointed — but I’m also grateful for the experience, proud that I put myself out there again, and already thinking about what I can do differently next time.

For me, doing a show border is a great way to collaborate with and support local businesses such as @lincolnshireplantsupportsltd and @welland_vale so a massive thank you to everyone who helped, supported and encouraged me along the way. ❤️

Back to the day job maintaining gardens and not designing them!

Come with me to @welland_vale garden center
We visited this lovely garden center on a sunny Sunday afternoon and looked at some fruits trees for the garden. We also wanted some vegetable plants, but the hot weather and lack of rain meant we had missed the boat.

They have lots of other things to look at including a big shop full of home goods and garden supplies. There is also a nice looking cafe which we would love be to visit next time.

New to keeping Roses
HELP NEEDED 🙏

I’ve been told recently, and I’ve never noticed this before, that Roses stems normally only have 5 leaves. Who knew….

So now I’m spending (far too much) time searching for 6/7 leaf stems to remove 🫣

I did a quick fact check Google and as per usual, it hasn’t answered me properly 🤪

So over to you lovely gardeners out there for some advice 🙏🙏

Do I leave them to go wild or carry on snipping them off?
