VENDOR HIGHLIGHT: Wells Farms Premium Beef

Wells Farms is a first generation, small, family farm with farm locations just outside Madison, Wisconsin. Kenny and Sarah Wells — with the help of their two daughters — take pride in delivering you locally raised, premium beef.

Their herd consists primarily of Angus and Angus-Cross cattle raised on grass pastures and their mother’s milk for approximately the first seven months of life. After weaning, the calves are transitioned to a higher percentage grain diet. For the last four to five months prior to harvest, their cattle is fed a diet consisting of corn, soybean meal and a vitamin/mineral mix designed to balance their nutritional requirements along with being fed high-quality hay. This high energy ration helps to ensure the development of marbling, which gives you a flavorful cut of beef.

In addition to MSFM, you can find Wells Farms beef at the Sun Prairie Farmers Market, their on-farm store in Rio, or delivered to your door! Learn more at their website or follow Sarah on Instagram for tasty recipes and farm updates.

Great Taste of the Midwest weekend is not over, not by a long shot. We have a really fun day planned today at WDBC.

First off, it's our monthly Brats & Bloodys. We're grilling brats from Jenifer St Market and serving our house-made bloodys, complete with our build-your-own fixings bar. Some hair of the dog for you festival goers out there 🐶

And if you were a bit overserved yesterday, we have some Ambition Nitro Coffee from our friends at Rusty Dog Coffee ☕

We're also the finish line for The Lil' Drifty, a three day, 100 mile kayak and bike challenge through the Driftless Region. While it's not Odysseus returning 20 years after the Trojan War, it's still pretty impressive.

As part of the celebration, we'll have the Kyler Cousio & Seth James Duo performing from 1-3pm.

And we'll still have the biergarten in place, so you can lounge or play games outside.

Happy end of Great Taste weekend everyone!

Here's what's happening in the taproom this week:

Sunday - 🌭 🛶🍺- Brats & Bloodys, Lil' Drifty Finish, Kyler Cousio & Seth James Duo 1-3pm
Monday - 🧜🏼🧌👹 - Lego Night, presented by Working Draft and Bricks and Minifigs, starting at 6:30
Tuesday - 🅱️4️⃣🍺 - Bingo Night starting at 6:30, Side Pull Tuesday
Wednesday - ❓🤔💡 - Trivia Night starting at 6:30
Friday - 🥪🍺🚴🏼‍♀️ - Food Truck Friday w/ Sandwich Hub 5-8pm, Curbside Bicycles repair pop-up 4-7pm
Saturday - 🦪🍻🦪 - Oyster Shell-ebration. Sardine shucking oysters 1-6pm, tapping of Shell-ebration Oyster Stout

Have a great week everyone 🍻

Five things I'll always spend the money on 🧈🫜🥓

Local produce, local meat, good butter, high quality grains, and good coffee. A lot of my favorites come from farmers and small shops where I've actually met the people behind the products.

Here's the part I think about a lot: when you buy from a farmer at the market, a roadside farmstand, a local co-op, or a local coffee roaster, that money doesn't leave. It goes right back into the place you live. The farm stays in business, the shop keeps its doors open, and the community and neighborhoods you live in get stronger for it. It costs a bit more sometimes, and I've made my peace with that.

Send this to your farmers market bff. 🥕

It’s such a beautiful day 🌞 stop by for the last taste of July and know that the produce you buy here…

🍅 is picked at peak freshness (often just 24 hours before the market) and contains 40% more nutritional value than produce picked prematurely for long-distance shipping
🥕 is grown within 1 hour of the market, significantly less food miles than what you’ll find at the grocery store
🥬 is minimally packaged, reducing the environmental footprint of your food
🍆 is more biodiverse than grocery store produce — often heirloom varieties that offer unique flavor, color or texture
🥦 is grown by someone in your community whose name you know, who you can talk to and ask questions of, who will give you recipe advice

All in all, come on down and support your local growers, makers, bakers and shakers!

I recently visited the Sun Prairie Farmers Market. @wellsfarmsbeef was atbthe top of my vendor list.

I had a great visit with Sarah and bought a package of Gyro Meat - a combo of goat, pork and gyro-like seasonings.

Tonight I made a Mediterranean Gyro Bowl, using a recipe from the American Lamb Board. The bowl was delicious, the gyro meat was amazing!!!

If you like gyros, you have to try this meat!!!

The taproom will also be closing today at 5pm so The Safe Bar Network can come in and work with our staff. We do this every year because maintaining a safe, positive space for customers and staff could not be more important to us.
