As part of @WideOpenWalls, the Sacramento mural festival, artist @WelSed, painted a mural on our central plant located close to the intersection of 49th and 50th streets. Wel is a post-Internet portrait, installation artist and muralist whose technique incorporates classical portrait compositions with a pop of surrealist and abstract expressionist elements.

Sed shared the inspiration for the mural: “It depicts Mother Nature meditating on the future of sustainable energy sources, hence why she is facing a rendition of the READ Biodigester (the domed element in the image),” said Sed. “Her position is facing the sun as it rises during the day, a nod to each day being a new one to grow in. And as it sets, it hints at past endeavors into solar. Movement within the image also references wind and steam power. Each sustainable endeavor has been represented and is made to show the cooperation between past sustainability efforts, from the elements previously mentioned, alongside the current ones used by the co-generation plant."

Thank you, Wel, for the beaitiful new addition to our art collection!

Wide Open Walls mural festival is returning with a new approach for their eighth consecutive edition. After painting California’s capitol city with 200 murals, they’re further enriching Sacramento’s landscape by enlivening local schools with artworks. In 2023 alone, Wide Open Walls has painted eight schools, sometimes near entirely, inside and outside alike, depending on each building’s architecture. Their latest work at Rosa Parks Elementary concluded May 22. // Link in Bio
