COMMENT PODCAST for the full show. A lot of women hear ā€œPCOSā€ and picture one very specific patient: Overweight. Acne. Facial hair. Hair loss. But PCOS does not always look like the old textbook picture. Some women with PCOS are lean. They may look completely healthy from the outside, while dealing with irregular cycles or other signs of hormonal dysfunction. That is why the diagnosis is not made by appearance alone. And despite the name, you do not have to have polycystic ovaries on ultrasound to have PCOS. That was one of the most important points Dr. Wendy Warner made in our conversation. Sometimes the patient who does not ā€œlook like PCOSā€ is exactly the patient who gets overlooked. Comment PODCAST for the full episode. COMMENT PODCAST for the full show. Irregular periods in a teenager are not always abnormal. But hereā€™s when I start paying closer attention: Her cycles became regularā€¦ and then they became irregular again. That tells you something changed. In my conversation with Dr. Wendy Warner, she made a great point: If the body had already established a rhythm and then lost it, ask what changed upstream? Stress? Cortisol? Nutrition? Training? Sleep? The goal is not just to label the cycle ā€œirregular.ā€ It is to ask: Why did a previously normal pattern change? That is where the clinical investigation gets interesting. COMMENT PODCAST for the full show. Most people assume more exercise is always better. But when it comes to period symptoms, that may not be true. Dr. Wendy Warner made an important point in our conversation: The patients she sees with the worst cramps are often at the extremes. They either are not exercising at allā€¦ or they are over-exercising. In younger women especially, too much training can become another physiologic stressor, with effects on cortisol, inflammation, and blood sugar. The lesson is not to stop exercising. It is to recognize that more is not always better. Sometimes the body needs the right dose of stress, not the maximum dose. Comment PODCAST for the full episode. COMMENT PODCAST for the full show. Your testosterone can look ā€œnormalā€ on paper and still not tell the whole story. Combined birth control pills can increase sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Think of SHBG like a sponge. The more testosterone it binds, the less may be available as free testosterone. That can matter for things like: ā€¢ Libido ā€¢ Muscle ā€¢ Energy ā€¢ How a woman feels overall This is why I donā€™t like looking at a total testosterone level in isolation. The number may look fine. The physiology may tell a different story. Dr. Wendy Warner and I got into this during our conversation on the FMP Essentials Show. Comment PODCAST for the full episode. COMMENT PODCAST for the full show. Birth control can be incredibly convenient. But what happens when a young woman starts it because her cycles are irregular, stays on it for years, and then comes off when she is ready to start a family? That is the question Dr. Wendy Warner raises here. Sometimes the issue is not simply what happens when you stop the pill. It is whether the reason the cycles were abnormal in the first place was ever understood. And when someone is now older and trying to conceive, time matters. This is exactly why I believe we need to think upstream much earlier in womenā€™s health. COMMENT PODCAST for the full show. What if we are starting too late? When a young woman has difficult periods, symptom control can absolutely have a role. But Dr. Wendy Warner raises a bigger question: Are we also asking why it is happening in the first place? Sometimes the most important part of medicine is not just treating what is happening today. It is understanding the physiology that may shape what happens years from now. That is the conversation I want more clinicians, parents, and young women having. A week of learning, teaching, collaboration, and gratitude. Over the past several days, I had the privilege of traveling to Seattle to help record content for the Institute for Functional Medicineā€™s Hormone Advanced Practice Module. What most people will see is the finished course. What they wonā€™t see are the countless hours of preparation, the discussions, the teamwork, the production crew, the health educators, the faculty collaboration, and the shared commitment to helping practitioners better serve their patients. One of the things I appreciate most about experiences like this is the opportunity to learn from remarkable colleagues who continue to challenge my thinking and expand my perspective. The best educators never stop being students. Thank you to the entire IFM team, faculty, health educators, and production crew for your professionalism, dedication, and passion for advancing practitioner education. Heading home grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a mission that ultimately helps improve the lives of patients around the world. ā€“ Dr. Yousef Elyaman #IFM #FunctionalMedicine #HormoneHealth #MedicalEducation #HealthcareEducation RootCauseMedicine FMPEssentials LifelongLearning Physician HealthEducation IntegrativeMedicine Gratitude BehindTheScenes

One of the unexpected blessings of experiences like this is the people you meet along the way. The courses, lectures, recordings, and educational content are important. But what often stays with me the longest are the conversations, friendships, shared meals, and moments outside the studio. Grateful to Amy Mack and Dr. Joel Evans for bringing together such an incredible group of educators, health professionals, and creative minds. One of the things I appreciate most about the IFM community is the shared commitment to learning, collaboration, and improving the lives of the patients we serve. Medicine is ultimately about people. And some of the most meaningful learning happens when we step away from the cameras, slides, and microphones and simply spend time together. Thank you for the hospitality, the conversations, and the memories. ā€“ Dr. Yousef Elyaman

You do NOT have to lift heavy weights to build stronger bones. In my recent podcast with Dr. Wendy Warner, we talked about something many women need to hear: There are powerful, gentle ways to support your bones. Research shows that practices like Tai Chi and Qigong can: ā€¢ Improve bone strength ā€¢ Enhance balance ā€¢ Reduce fracture risk And hereā€™s where it gets even more importantā€¦ These practices calm the nervous system. Because stress is one of the biggest bone dissolvers. When cortisol is elevated over time, it actively breaks down bone. This is why I teach Yoga Therapy as a cornerstone of bone health: ā€¢ Eccentric, controlled movement strengthens muscles + joints ā€¢ Balance training reduces fall risk ā€¢ Breathwork regulates your stress response This is the missing piece for so many women. āœØ Gentle movement still strengthens āœØ Balance protects your independence āœØ Stress regulation protects your bones You donā€™t need to punish your body to build it. You need to support it. Have you tried Tai Chi, Qigong, or Yoga for your bones? #bonehealth #osteoporosis #strongerboneslifestyle #debirobinson #yogatherapy

Most Women Donā€™t Need Bone Medications? A Gynecologist Explains Why The title of this episode says it clearly: Most Women Donā€™t Need Bone Medications. In this powerful conversation, I sit down with gynecologist Dr. Wendy Warner, who has been in the trenches of womenā€™s health since the very beginning of the modern osteoporosis model. She was practicing medicine when Fosamax first entered the market. She was there when DEXA scans became the standard for diagnosing bone loss. And she witnessed firsthand what happened when the Womenā€™s Health Initiative removed hormones from millions of women in 2002. Dr. Warner connects the dots between these major shifts in medicine and the bone health system many women are navigating today. What she explains is eye opening. For decades, the message has been that osteoporosis leads directly to medication. Yet many women are searching for a different path. They want to understand the root causes of bone loss and how lifestyle, hormones, nutrition, and metabolism influence bone health. In this episode, we discuss why many women may not need bone medications and why a deeper, more comprehensive approach to bone health is long overdue. If you have ever been told medication was your only option, or if you are looking for natural approaches to protect and strengthen your bones, this is an important conversation to hear.
