Charles Burnand Gallery – PAD London 2025

Charles Burnand Gallery presents Ethereal Monoliths, an exhibition exploring the paradox of the monumental rendered weightless. Each work within the booth invites reflection on presence and perception, where solidity dissolves into sensation and material becomes light.

From sculptural bronze and hand-silvered glass to ottchil, marquetry, and gilded wood, these works by international artists and designers reveal mastery through material transformation. Together they form a dialogue between strength and subtlety, permanence and transience a celebration of design as both art and philosophy.

Ethereal Monoliths embodies the gallery’s ongoing pursuit of radical material integrity and emotional resonance, a presentation where the monumental is not defined by scale, but by stillness, craft, and quiet power.

$Artist Profile – Weon Rhee In this video we encounter the layered world of Weon Rhee, where fragments of architectural timber are transformed into sculptural forms that hover between monument and ruin. His process begins with PSL beams, engineered wood marked with scratches, voids, and imperfections which he fills, carves, and pigments into new topographies. What was once discarded becomes a site of memory and renewal. Rhee’s Primitive Structures series evokes the ancient origins of architecture, dolmens, standing stones, megaliths…structures that lean, tilt, and shift, reminding us of both fragility and endurance. In works like We Come From Far Away, crystalline eruptions fracture and reform across wooden surfaces, suggesting encounters between the organic and the otherworldly. Through this dialogue of material and imagination, Rhee embraces imperfection not as flaw but as poetry. His works are invitations to linger in the in-between: between decay and repair, stasis and transformation, the primitive and the present. Presented with Charles Burnand Gallery as part of @designmiami Design Miami InSitu, ILLUMINATED: A Spotlight on Korean Design, curated by Hyeyoung Cho @gorgornia for Design Miami Seoul, these works affirm Rhee’s place among the most compelling voices in contemporary design. PUBLIC SHOW DAYS Tuesday Sep 2–Sunday Sep 14 | 10am–8pm LOCATION Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) 281 Eulji-ro, Jung District, Seoul, South Korea Video Directors: @e_jeongwoo & @ywoos_$
